A. Sherrod Blakely is joined by Amin Elhassan of Meadowlark Media and Sirius XM Sports. They discussed the current situation of former Celtic Terry Rozier, who is being federally investigated for conspiring in an illegal betting scheme. Next, they look back on a trade that never was: Kevin Garnett going from the Timberwolves to the Suns.

00:00The Big 3 NBA Podcast is powered by PrizePix and the Game Time app.
00:25Hello folks and welcome to another edition of The Big 3 NBA Podcast.
00:29I'm your host, H-Rob Blakely, and I'm joined today by Metal
00:33Arc Media and Sirius XM star Amin El-Hassan.
00:38How you doing, brother?
00:39What's up, man?
00:40I don't, I don't, star is a little, a little rough.
00:43I don't know if I'm a star.
00:44We only bring stars on the show.
00:46I'm Derek White.
00:47I'm a good role player.
00:49Every once in a while.
00:50I have like, oh, yeah, the really good game tonight, but it's
00:53more about the consistency.
00:55Consistency.
00:55I love that.
00:56I love that.
00:57Normally, we have Gary Washburn and Kwame Lewis on here joining
01:00me, but you know what?
01:01Their weekend rates are a little steep.
01:03So we gotta, so we, you know, we have to make sure we can budget
01:07to have me do this and not them because it's just too damn expensive
01:12and I'm not as expensive as they are.
01:14But you mentioned our good friend, Derek White, who is, you know,
01:19again, we're just going to kind of really just kind of cannonball
01:21away into the conversation.
01:23Celtics coming off a two-point win over a Pelicans team that wasn't
01:28anywhere even close to full strength.
01:30We can spend all day going over.
01:32Why?
01:32Why?
01:33Why?
01:33But we're going to do that because this is not about that.
01:37Derek White again had 16 points.
01:39So they cut Pritchett's for seeing is Jalen Brown had a nice game
01:44thing at 27 6 and 4 Tatum had a double-double including a game
01:48winner, which was like full confession when he pulled up for that
01:52shot.
01:52I'm thinking it comes over time because that's not going to go in
01:56that's not because Jalen had made a big shot before that that had
02:00put them up briefly and then Pelicans came back and tied it and
02:03typically when one of them has like a really nice late game moment,
02:08you ain't getting that from the other.
02:10So it was kind of nice to see both of those guys, you know, able
02:13to do some things down the stretch.
02:17But what I really wanted to talk to it to mean about it is just
02:20more NBA centric topics and no matter how I try.
02:24I mean, I can't get the heat off my tongue.
02:29I'm looking at the trade deadline.
02:31I'm thinking because I went into this week thinking, you know, what
02:34we ain't going to talk about Jimmy.
02:35We ain't going to talk about Jimmy.
02:36And if we do we talk about Jimmy for a hot minute.
02:39Maybe the topic this week is one of my guys.
02:45Terry Roger.
02:46That's right.
02:47Who and folks around here in Boston.
02:49No, Terry was here was my guy.
02:52That was my dude.
02:53And so what I'm saying, like he didn't do his way.
02:55Oh, he didn't.
02:56Oh damn.
02:56He didn't news for that.
02:57Ooh.
02:57Yeah for those who are not familiar with why we're talking about
03:02Terry Roger.
03:03Terry Roger was recently indicted for oh goodness.
03:09Well, how let me let me think of the best way to characterize
03:12this.
03:13Okay, federal investigation for betting.
03:15So that let me just just keep it real simple and it's tied into
03:19the the John Tay Porter gambling issue that that happened on
03:23not not so long ago and for you.
03:25I mean, I guess right off the bat.
03:28How big a deal is this because we saw what John say it, you
03:33know, it really seemed like whoa, but how big do you think
03:35that the Terry Porter element of this is there's a there's
03:41a couple things, right?
03:43So number one, we have to point out that this happened when
03:45Terry was a member of the Charlotte Hornets, even though
03:47he's a Miami Heat player.
03:48Now, this is something from 2023.
03:51I believe the end of the 2023 season.
03:53So we start there and we also mentioned that like this thing
04:01had already happened.
04:02It's not happening.
04:04It's kind of the already investigation happened.
04:07I got a tip about this actually back in the November.
04:11Someone said, you know, they they they got Terry Terry Rozier
04:15as well and I said, oh wow, I didn't know that and I thought
04:18the news would come out at some point and then it just never
04:20came out.
04:20So I kind of forgot and then I was we get that bombshell on
04:24Friday or was it late Thursday.
04:26So there's that.
04:28So the next part of this is it's the same ring that was dealing
04:33with the John Tay Porter thing.
04:34Now the huge difference I would say at this point is with
04:39John Tay Porter.
04:41We got transcripts, right?
04:43Communications, the receipts were evident.
04:46Yes, the most receipted receipts ever, you know, crime 101.
04:53Yeah, look, I'm not encouraging anyone to do crimes.
04:56But if you're going to do a crime, don't text each other about
04:59the crime in great detail about how you're going to do the
05:01crime.
05:02Yeah, which is kind of with the John Tay Porter stuff.
05:04When I read through the transcripts of that.
05:06I'm like, come on man.
05:07What are you doing?
05:08Yeah.
05:09Hey, I'll just tell them my eye hurts and then I'll hug.
05:12Clearly, you're not you're new to this whole crime thing.
05:15If you're doing that.
05:16Yeah, right.
05:17So it's we don't have anything yet or at all at this point
05:24of Terry Rozier engaging in the same kind of direct conversation
05:29there, right?
05:31Obviously, no criminal charges were brought but with regards
05:36to basketball.
05:37I think the most important thing is they're getting caught,
05:42right?
05:42A lot of people worried.
05:43Oh, if you bring gambling into this, man, we're going to
05:47have all sides of gambling scandals and you know, my stance
05:50has been pretty clear.
05:52There's two reasons why I don't think we'll get too many
05:55scandals.
05:56Number one is the obvious one most NBA players, not all of
06:01them, but most NBA players make a lot of money.
06:03So in order for the juice to be worth the squeeze for me
06:06to throw a game or throw a line or whatever it is an unders
06:09on prop bets as John Taylor Porter was doing.
06:12I I've got either you're going to be paying me an amount
06:15of money that doesn't even make sense.
06:18Right to win a couple of hundred thousand or whatever or
06:23I've got to be someone like John Taylor Porter.
06:24I don't make a lot of money.
06:26Right, right relative to the rest of the NBA.
06:29And then how many prop bets are going on for the 9th 10th
06:3211th 12th man?
06:34Not many not many.
06:35All right.
06:35Okay.
06:36So that's one safeguard.
06:37The other is the gambling houses.
06:40Notice they know when they got a lot.
06:43We have a lot of action on John Taylor Porter who most people
06:47couldn't even pick out of a lineup.
06:50That's his brother is that that's the most famous thing
06:54about him is that he's Michael Porter jr.'s brother, right?
06:57So now we're talking about okay.
06:59So the people who make money ain't going to be doing this
07:02because it's not not worth it for them.
07:05The people don't make money.
07:06There aren't a lot of bets on them.
07:07But if there are the gambling houses are going to notice
07:11the action.
07:12They're not just taking money blind.
07:14It's all computerized.
07:16It all comes in digitally and they see wow, we've got how
07:20much on who that that is kind of raises the red flag.
07:26It raises the red flag.
07:27Now he might go out and have a triple-double like, oh, I
07:29guess whatever.
07:30It was just a bunch of dumb bets, but it's like oh and
07:33they all hit all this money hit that's another red flag.
07:37So if there's all sorts of checks and bounces, is it ever
07:41going to be zero?
07:42No, because there's always going to be an idiot who's going
07:45to text his buddy.
07:47Hey, man, I'm gonna do this just I'm gonna tell him I'm
07:48sick in the beginning of the first quarter, but the reality
07:52is we're we have systems to catch this and I think we are
07:58catching this now.
08:00I'll end on this.
08:03The fact that it happened at Terry Rozier again, nothing
08:06has been confirmed in the way in the John Taylor Porter
08:09type of way, but the fact that it's surrounding him.
08:12That's a bigger name.
08:13Yeah.
08:14So that does I think give people a little bit more unease
08:17than the John Taylor Porter situation.
08:19Yeah, I agree.
08:20And the one thing that that to me jumps out about this
08:24and these type of situations isn't so much the reality
08:27what's happening, but the optics of it and you know, when
08:30the NBA started to kind of wink wink at, you know, betting
08:34and then they decided to boo them up the way they have
08:38it went from, you know, just like a man.
08:40She kind of cute to like, yo, what's your thing?
08:43We're holding hands.
08:45We're walking through the quad and we're holding hands.
08:48We out in public be like, yep.
08:50That's my bae.
08:51Yes, we in it like that.
08:53And to me that's where the concern comes because I do
08:57think that there are lots of different levels and layers
09:00to where they're checking each other to make sure this
09:01thing doesn't get too out of control.
09:04But at the same time if I'm Joe fan and I'm just you
09:07know, I'm not following this stuff closely.
09:09I'm thinking like damn even if even if Terry Rozier is
09:13completely innocent and it has done nothing wrong.
09:16The optics are telling me there was a gambling situation.
09:19His name has been brought into it and that's the NBA.
09:23Do they have this gambling scandal?
09:25And that's to me.
09:26That's the concern not so much the reality but the optics
09:29and is the NBA bracing itself to deal with not just the
09:33reality was happening, but just the potential downfall
09:37from an optics standpoint.
09:39Yeah, the optics part is tough because it's not it's not
09:43nothing you can't ignore it.
09:44This is at the end of the day.
09:45This is a business and if the customers some of the customers
09:48believe something about it, then even if it's not true,
09:53it becomes difficult a great.
09:55This is one of the reasons why I thought the NBA has
09:58been very soft.
10:00Punishing players and coaches who imply that either gambling
10:05or the money wanted an outcome in the game.
10:08We've had a coach Darko up in Toronto last season.
10:12We had Rudy Gobert.
10:13We had Jamal Murray.
10:14We had a bunch of people say very bluntly.
10:18Oh, it's because they want this or you know, Rudy Gobert
10:20did the money sign.
10:21Yeah, but man, I've been a strong advocate for Commissioner
10:26Silver for Joe Dumars, but those guys to come down hard
10:31because of the optics.
10:33The optics is look people are going to believe.
10:38Oh, there is kind of unseen forces that are dictating this
10:41and sure.
10:42My thing is this it comes down to.
10:45You could say refs are stupid.
10:48You could say go back to Lens Crafters.
10:51You could say, oh, he doesn't like me personally because
10:57of XYZ situation.
10:58You could say all those things and those are all those are
11:01I think inbounds.
11:02They may not be accurate, but they're inbounds as far as
11:05frustration venting what we cannot allow in our sport at
11:10all is to ever allow the flippant implication.
11:14He's on the take that what the viewer is consuming is like
11:19wrestling.
11:20It's scripted.
11:20It ain't real.
11:21We can't have that.
11:23We can't have that from our players.
11:24Our coaches are our media partners.
11:27We cannot allow that to proliferate.
11:29They got to come down hard on that.
11:31Now.
11:32That's also the reason why Dante Porter got hit with the
11:37yeah, the the punishments that he did those punishments were
11:41that strict because we cannot allow this or this guy actually
11:45was trying to script out and and make what we're watching
11:49not pure competition get them up out of here.
11:52And that's as a as an example, like hey, if you want to do
11:55this, if you want to risk your livelihood in the highest
11:59paid professional sport in America.
12:02For a couple of G's here and there and the doors right there.
12:06Go ahead.
12:06Go play in Europe.
12:07Go play China somewhere else.
12:08Yeah, because I mean that that is insanity.
12:12I mean you talking about basically like per diem money
12:16that you're willing to risk your base salary for.
12:20Yep.
12:21What brothers come on now, we come too far to be this stupid
12:25sometimes it's it's it's like it would be the equivalent of
12:31like a doctor a surgeon shoplifting from Target, right?
12:37What are you doing?
12:38Why are you why would you put yourself in that situation?
12:42Now, some people are going to be in a situation where this
12:47is a matter of survival.
12:48I've got to do this years and years ago.
12:50You remember headache in Arizona State the gambling scandal
12:56scandal where he was point-shaving and but thing that
13:02remembers this guy was a college basketball player, right?
13:07Meaning he doesn't make any money.
13:09This is pre-NIL.
13:10This is way before NIL.
13:12This is early 90s, right?
13:14And so you say why would you jeopardize man?
13:18Like I got to make ends meet.
13:20I have responsibilities at home.
13:22I'm not, you know, and everyone around me here in this machine
13:27is making money and I'm the one who's playing and actually
13:30controlling the game and I don't make a don't that doesn't
13:33make sense.
13:34I'm not saying it's right.
13:36I'm saying I understand right don't understand why an NBA
13:41player would ever engage in that kind of stuff, right?
13:44Right.
13:44Absolutely.
13:45Absolutely.
13:46And then again, just well shout out to a mean for the 90s
13:51references.
13:52One of the things and again, I mean, you know with his, you
13:56know platforms and a podcast that he's on every now and then
13:59you'll hit the folks with something and it just warms my
14:02heart.
14:02I was listening to you about a week or two ago and you may
14:05reference to night and weekends when you got on the phone.
14:10Yes.
14:11I said, you know what?
14:12That's a real og right there because the kids don't know
14:15about that.
14:16They don't know about that.
14:17I mean, man, like let me tell you something.
14:20If there was a whole era of people who all had cell phones
14:25now, this isn't like in the early days were like, oh, you
14:27got a cell phone.
14:28They hit a point where like, okay mass adoption has happened,
14:33but someone call you at like 2 and afternoon.
14:39I'm not picking up 9 p.m.
14:40901.
14:41You get to have every conversation you want.
14:44I mean facts true story.
14:46My wife and I were engaged and she was in upstate New York
14:49and I was in North Carolina.
14:51We decided to move her down to North Carolina because it was
14:54cheaper for her to stay down there.
14:57Then they're calling each other on non-peak or during peak
15:02time. So we that's how bad the phone system was.
15:06I mean, you really had to find those nights and weekends
15:09and hope and just, you know, just be patient.
15:15I'll tell you another one that these kids don't understand
15:17long-distance calling.
15:19What is that?
15:21What's your area code?
15:23Exactly.
15:24831.
15:25Oh, no.
15:26You're gonna have to call me.
15:27You call me.
15:28I'm not calling you.
15:29That's not coming on my phone bill.
15:31Facts and if you work at a news organization and this is a
15:34true story, don't you be making long-distance calls because
15:37they will track you down and they won't check you on that.
15:41They will shout out to me and that's that's a shout out to
15:43me and to my girl Jamel Hill.
15:45She know what I'm talking about.
15:46We both got we both got caught in that Matrix report.
15:50Y'all got dinged with the thing about the phone bill and
15:52this is and you're like a source.
15:54Yeah.
15:54Yeah.
15:55Yeah, we did.
15:55We did.
15:56So no, but I just got to keep the conversation going.
15:59I wanted to get your take on all-stars and specifically
16:04all-star snubs because that's what we love to talk about.
16:08I'm of the mindset that if you are going to tell me somebody
16:11got snubbed, who are you taking off the replacement with?
16:14So exactly when I'm looking at the Eastern Conference, there's
16:17one guy that got picked that I'm looking at him a little sus
16:21because I think there's at least one or two other guys that
16:24probably should have gone on before.
16:25Well, I'm curious who is the one or two players that you
16:29think probably should have been on the all-star team in the
16:31East first that wasn't.
16:35I thought look I did my own mock ballot about a week ago
16:39or so and Trey Young was on mine.
16:42I thought Trey Young look his numbers aren't great from an
16:45efficiency standpoint, but I thought he was able to do exactly
16:52what that team needed to be successful at above 500, which
16:57is be a focal point for their offense, right?
17:00Not only his scoring but it getting everyone else involved.
17:02He's among the league leaders and assists he and again, the
17:07team is winning.
17:07I thought he should have been recognized.
17:11But other than that, like I think everyone else's ballot.
17:16I'm like there was not to me like I'm like you if you tell
17:20me, oh, I can't believe so-and-so wasn't an all-star.
17:23You need to tell me who's who isn't an all-star.
17:26And so I look at these names.
17:28I'm like, man, every one of these guys is having a great
17:31year in the same way that when people say, oh man that you're
17:37Giannis and Harden were going for MVP and Giannis ended up
17:39winning it.
17:40Oh, I can't believe I said you can't believe Giannis on MVP.
17:44I just look at it.
17:46Like I'm not saying I'm not saying hey, you're wrong to think
17:49Harden should have been MVP.
17:50I'm saying you can't say I can't believe that this guy who
17:55had this insane season is MVP at some point.
17:58We have to accept payment.
17:59They're all great.
18:00But I guess this is the one right?
18:02Yeah.
18:03Yeah.
18:03Yeah, I'm an Asian conference.
18:05I'm with you.
18:06Trey young was to be the one outlier that just like wait,
18:08what would just happen?
18:10And for me the guy that I would have seriously considered not
18:14having on the team and had Trey instead is Tyler hero.
18:18I think Tyler's had a good year.
18:19I think he's been super efficient.
18:21But when I look at just the difference making that he has
18:25been to Miami and I look at the difference making that that
18:29Trey has been to Atlanta is hard for me to go with Tyler
18:32hero and the folks around Boston.
18:35They got a different kind of relationship with Tyler hero
18:39that most people realize because that was the guy that Danny
18:43Ace thought he was going to be drafted and what happened Miami
18:47that particular year the heat were picking right before the
18:50Celtics.
18:50So the Celtics instead of getting Tyler hero, they round
18:54up with Romeo Langford little different kind of player.
18:58Wow, and we and those of us who cover the team that we
19:00remember the moment that the heat pig was announced and how
19:05there was a collective groan from the brass.
19:08Yeah, because we all knew they were thinking like, ah, yeah,
19:12it would have been entirely to win like two or three places
19:14before them, you know, it is what it is.
19:16But they literally went one spot before they pick.
19:20So to that story, I got a quick story.
19:23That's kind of like that in 2009.
19:25I was working for the Phoenix Suns for an office and we
19:28thought we had a deal with Golden State on draft day to
19:31get their pick.
19:32And so when the Timberwolves picked Ricky Rubio and Johnny
19:41Flynn, Johnny Flynn, yeah back to back meaning number seven
19:45Golden State, Curry was still on the board.
19:47We all erupted in cheers.
19:49Paul Coro, who was the beat writer at the time.
19:51You remember Paul?
19:52I don't know.
19:52He's under public.
19:53Yeah.
19:53So Paul said the holding pen for the media was two floors
19:57beneath us and they still heard us cheer because they because
20:01they heard and what we thought we thought, oh my God, we
20:05got Steph Curry.
20:06And then later that night after we went out to celebrate
20:08after the draft, I see Griff David Griffin and Steve
20:11Kerr and they don't look so happy.
20:13I'm like, what's going on?
20:14And it's like Nellie changed his mind.
20:17Oh, hold on now.
20:19So I'm still thinking nah, man.
20:21Nah, nah, nah.
20:21That's just it's just leveraging whatever.
20:24And then the next day I saw the front page of the Arizona
20:28Republic was all full page picture of Steph Curry pointing
20:32to the sky.
20:32It says a new era begins and I'm like, oh yeah, we got this
20:35guy.
20:35Oh man, we they figured it out overnight and then I walk
20:38into office and they're like, nope, it ain't happening.
20:41And so I still have that paper somewhere in my garage in
20:44a box.
20:44It's because it was like that moment.
20:47I was like, yeah, there it is.
20:48That's our new franchise player and and the fact that they
20:53could hear you guys could hear them grown in that that
20:56reminded me that story.
20:57No, I'll tell you why Tyler Hero is an all-star.
21:00Okay over Trae Young what the what the argument is.
21:03I think first of all the coaches who obviously picked the
21:07reserves.
21:08They respect the environment of Miami, right?
21:15Not only of how they do things, right?
21:18There's a there's a tacit respect that but also they respect
21:22what they've been going through.
21:24True.
21:24It's a very chaotic season that they've had as far as distractions
21:29and whatnot.
21:31And obviously that's a Jimmy Butler situation and Tyler has
21:34been their best offensive player throughout the entire time.
21:37He's been consistent.
21:38His efficiency numbers are there and then terms of wins and
21:40losses.
21:42They're ahead of the Hawks, right?
21:43They are ahead of where Atlanta is.
21:45So I think that's the argument for Tyler Hero.
21:49I think it comes down to look, you know, he's playing great.
21:52He's efficient.
21:53They're winning and they've had to deal with this.
21:56Whereas for Trae Young, you could take a give him a ding
21:58for the efficiency numbers and I know they've dealt with
22:01injuries particularly Jalen Johnson who's out for the year
22:04now.
22:04We find out but just you know, it's one of those two.
22:09It's like six of one and half dozen of the other.
22:12What are you going to do?
22:13Yeah.
22:14Yeah, it's it's just I mean having watched both of those
22:17guys this year and just knowing how when you're preparing
22:21for Miami and you're preparing for Atlanta.
22:26Man, it's it's it's a tough pill to swallow for me to put
22:31Trey basically on a seat behind Tyler here, but I get it
22:35though.
22:35It absolutely is and it's not like he's a buster.
22:38I mean when you talk about a guy who averaged like eight
22:41points 10 rebounds or you know, eight assists, I mean Tyler's
22:43had a good season.
22:44There's no doubt about it, but I can see I can see the argument
22:47either way.
22:48I want to talk about in the Western Conference.
22:50No, now this was easy for me.
22:52This was a yeah, I mean who's not on that should be on.
22:58This is my thing.
22:59The Clippers have had a great year.
23:00If you're going to tell me only one Clipper goes to the
23:03All-Star game and it's not Norm Powell.
23:06I'm pretty shocked about that.
23:08Yeah, again.
23:09That's no disrespect to James Harden who I think is obviously
23:13a big part of their success, but I think Norman Powell has
23:16had an excellent year and Charlotte.
23:20I'm a admit to something that I don't know whether the coaches
23:24or the voters, you know, obviously whoever votes for what
23:29if they would admit out loud if I was a coach, there would
23:33be a part of me that would say James has been to enough
23:36of these things.
23:37This might be Norm Powell's only shot at an All-Star game.
23:41I was thinking that.
23:42Yep.
23:43And so it's like so I that alone would make me in my thought
23:47process Clippers have been good.
23:49They deserve an All-Star.
23:51I'm taking Norm because I don't know if this will ever happen
23:55for him again, right?
23:57Right and and and along those same lines.
24:00I agree with you.
24:01I don't think that James's season was distinct enough to where
24:06he could clearly take him over Norm.
24:08Yep to me.
24:10It's one of those things work.
24:11If you look at both of their bodies of work, they're so close
24:14that if to me if you can only take one, I'm going to take
24:18the new guy.
24:19Yeah, I'm with you.
24:20I would take the guy who in three or four years.
24:23How many more times do we really think Norm Powell is going
24:26to be in a conversation to be an All-Star and keep in mind
24:29the other fact that people almost never really think about
24:33every year.
24:33There's going to be a new wave of talent coming into the
24:36NBA every year.
24:37The guys that are pretty good.
24:39Now, there's going to be a couple of them.
24:40They're going to be great.
24:41And there's this dude named John Moran who let's be real.
24:47If he's healthy enough, you somebody spot is going to be
24:50taken.
24:50Yep.
24:51Yep.
24:52Yeah, you know, there's a part of me.
24:54That's real quick.
24:55There's a part of me.
24:56That's you know, it's one thing when it's a young guy, right?
25:02So last year there people like how is Victoria Minyama not
25:04an All-Star.
25:04I said, look, he's going to make plenty All-Star games.
25:06We don't have to worry about it to me.
25:08This is a little Brian his first year.
25:10We do the same thing.
25:11Yep, when it's a vet, it's like man, this might be the last
25:15the only time man.
25:17Like how how are we going to deny this guy?
25:20What would clearly be like a one of the crowning Achievements
25:26in his career?
25:27You're going to look back that time.
25:29I was an All-Star, right?
25:30Yeah, again to give it to a guy who then it at this point
25:35he's inconvenienced by the All-Star game, right?
25:37Like this one at heart is like another one of these.
25:39I gotta go.
25:39I gotta I gotta meet with these sponsors.
25:42I mean, I want to do any of this.
25:43I want to be in the Bahamas.
25:45Yeah, exactly.
25:46Exactly.
25:47So yeah, I'm with you.
25:49That's the that was the one outlier that just just didn't
25:53feel right and it isn't and the thing is most of the guys
25:56that you're talking about that are in the conversation
25:58about being an All-Star have had great season.
26:01Another one Sabonis.
26:03Yeah, I thought it's sacramental.
26:07It's similar to the Tyler Hero story as far as like the
26:10things that he's been through.
26:12I mean, your coach got fired.
26:14Your best player was out and you still giving me double
26:17doubles every single night like clockwork like, you know,
26:22def taxes double double from Sabonis.
26:24That's it's just going to happen.
26:27You leave the league.
26:29He leads the league of rebounding.
26:30He's top five and three-point percentage, which remember
26:33not so long ago.
26:34That was a weakness of his was that he couldn't take a
26:38step back and and he's shooting.
26:40I'm not saying he's getting Steph Curry attempts up, but
26:42it's not like two attempts a game.
26:45He's getting a significant number of shots up from beyond
26:47the arc.
26:49He was on my mock ballot as well.
26:53When I look at who made it again, like we said, it's hard
26:56to argue the biggest argument against the bonus to me is
27:01again.
27:01It's the the relative lack of success of the team.
27:04I know they've won a little bit more under Doug Christie,
27:06but that still puts them far behind the other bigs or
27:10reserves who made it.
27:11Jaron Jackson jr.
27:12And Alpern shangoon.
27:14Both of those guys play for teams that have been very
27:16successful and they deserve the credit for it.
27:20And then you got Victor Wembenyama.
27:22It's hard to deny that talent.
27:24And then you got Anthony Davis and Nicole.
27:25Yo, excuse me, Anthony Davis as another reserve again, he's
27:29having a year that could be in the MVP conversation at this
27:33point.
27:34So I'm with you Sabonis.
27:35I thought Sabonis was going to be there, but it's like I
27:38get why it's not.
27:40Yeah, right and put them exactly before we go any further.

29:26going to keep running down the list of topics to talk about
29:31today and we're going to talk a little bit about the Boston
29:36Celtics.
29:38Now, here's the thing of me being in Boston and you know,
29:42it's a different kind of sports town than most sports town.
29:45The Celtics won the chip last year.
29:47Everyone excited this year.
29:51They're not winning in a regular season at the same clip
29:54and yet, you know, as you look at the standings, they've
29:58got the third best record in the NBA behind Cleveland and
30:02OKC and yet you would think that they were headed to the
30:07lottery, right?
30:08You would think that they are, you know, that they're taking
30:12for Cooper flag or something like that.
30:14How do you assess what you've seen from the Celtics this
30:17year? And again, for someone who's been around the game
30:19for a while, you've seen how teams that year after they
30:23win a championship kind of flow.
30:24How do you see the Celtics, you know, kind of fitting into
30:28that whole, you know, that that that whole paradigm of
30:31winning championship.
30:33What are you going to do next?
30:34How do you see them handle having handled this this season
30:36after winning a title?
30:37Yeah.
30:38So the all the greats who have done the multiple championships
30:42all say the same thing.
30:43The second one is harder than the first and then if you're
30:46if you're lucky enough to be in a position with three in a
30:48row, that one's even harder.
30:51It compounds in difficulty and we already know winning one
30:55is incredibly hard to begin with, right?
30:57You have to have everything break right for you.
31:01If you think about the the Celtics last season, right?
31:06You kind of met shorthanded opponents in the car and the
31:10Eastern Conference and then you get to the West and Dallas
31:13is a great opponent, but probably not the toughest one
31:17that could have came out of the West, right?
31:18So when when you look at it like that, my buddy, Tom
31:22Haverstraw has a fun saying he says every NBA champion has
31:27an asterisk next to their name.
31:29So what do you mean is that will you go through every single
31:31year? You can find how they lucked out.
31:34Oh, they were hurt or the so-and-so or you know, Durant
31:37tears his Achilles against the against Toronto.
31:40Oh LeBron was in a bubble.
31:42Oh, you know, whatever it is.
31:45There's always a reason why you know, what luck was on your
31:48side. You have to be good enough to take advantage of that
31:50luck, but luck was on their side, right?
31:53So I think what I'm projecting here, but I think maybe
31:58what's happening for the Boston faithful is they're looking
32:00at their team and said, what if last year was lady luck?
32:04Right at the same time at the same time.
32:09We also know that when you have gone to the mountaintop.
32:15You tasted the sweet nectar of victory, right?
32:20Everything else kind of take there.
32:22It is.
32:22Yeah, you taste that champagne.
32:24Yep.
32:25Everything else kind of tastes like just soda water, right?
32:29Like, oh, this is Prosecco.
32:30It ain't champagne from the champagne region of France
32:33though. Exactly.
32:34So you are trying in essence.
32:37If you're the boss itself, it's like I just need to get through
32:40this get to these, you know, however many months get to these
32:4582 games without injury without turmoil, right?
32:50Because what did the Pat Riley's say a long time ago?
32:53The disease of me when they when you win everyone's like, where
32:57is my credit?
32:58Where's my money?
32:59Where's my I sacrifice now?
33:01It's my turn to shoot more or get more touches or more minutes
33:04or a different role or I should be starting all of these things
33:07creep in into the successful locker room because inevitably
33:12when we're successful everyone wants to feel like I am acknowledged
33:17for my contribution to success.
33:19So what Brad Stevens and Joe Missoula what they have to do is
33:23they have to manage this whole situation at the manage not to
33:27not number one.
33:28Nobody gets hurt number two.
33:31Nobody has these kind of negative feelings that could be detrimental
33:35to the process.
33:35Number three.
33:36We don't burn our guys out, right?
33:39Steve Kerr talks about the 73 win season which came after
33:42championship and saying that you know, there's two things that
33:46happen.
33:46Number one Steph Curry got hurt in the first round of the playoffs,
33:50but number two, there was a little bit of a burnout from them
33:54hunting this record going after this record getting that record.
33:57Yeah, they expended some mental energy that maybe would have
34:01been better served conserved for the playoff run.
34:05Yeah, so that's what they're going through there.
34:08But I think the part again that makes people say look, I mean
34:12you beat Miami without Jimmy Butler and you beat Cleveland without
34:17so-and-so and so-and-so and you beat Indiana without whatever,
34:21you know, India who should probably shouldn't even been there
34:23and so there's I think there's always going to be almost again.
34:28I'm not talking about the Celtics.
34:29I'm talking about the fan base and maybe the greater NBA fan
34:34base a little bit of an imposter syndrome.
34:36Yeah, we are really that good and then it doesn't help when
34:41you say hey since December 1st, you guys have been kind of like
34:45roughly a couple of games above 500 since December 1st that
34:50three-point shooting that was historic has been bottom half of
34:53the league, right?
34:55There's little things that people had a problem with the way
34:59Boston played say.
35:00Oh, you can't play like that now.
35:01It's time to come like, oh, it looks like it the the chickens
35:05are coming home to roost.
35:06So yeah, yeah.
35:07Yeah, because you know, there's a reason why last season was
35:11so unexpected.
35:13I mean no team ever in NBA history shot the three-ball like
35:17they did at that volume and won an NBA title.
35:20I mean, you know, you know, Don Nelson is thinking like I was
35:23trying to do this forever and go to the state and we could never
35:26even get to the damn playoffs and they just want to chip playing
35:29a way that I like to do it in terms of offense.
35:31So there's definitely some of that going on and you know, again,
35:36just watching the Celtics team play, you know, night in night
35:39out. You just feel as though there's a there's a style of play
35:45that they still haven't quite figured out how to play in order
35:49to be the best of all that they have to offer.
35:52I mean, it's great that you can shoot a lot of threes, but if
35:56you can I don't know drive to the basket finish at the rim,
35:59maybe draw and one put it put some stress on a team defensively.
36:03Maybe you look to do that.
36:04Maybe two or three more possessions a game instead of in a cut
36:07down to threes for maybe two or three a game.
36:09I don't know.
36:09Yeah.
36:10Yeah.
36:10So they're the only team that shoots more than 50% of its field
36:13goal attempts from beyond the three-point line.
36:16They they're at 53 and a half percent of their field goal attempts
36:20come outside of the point line.
36:21The next highest team is at 46, right?
36:24So that not only are they the only one do it.
36:26There is a pretty significant gap between them and number two.
36:30I think they're also there's also a case of you know, in baseball,
36:38you don't throw a change up because a change up is this incredible
36:43pitch.
36:43You throw a change up because the other team is expecting a
36:46fastball, right?
36:47That's the the the beauty of it all is the diversity, right?
36:51And there's something to be said in of a diversity in shot
36:55profile so that I got to keep you guessing in some way.
36:59Right?
37:00And then the last part about it is three-point shooting as we've
37:03seen over the last two months for the Celtics.
37:06It can leave sometimes but you can have a team of great shooters
37:09and then it just decides for a couple of weeks.
37:13Hey, man, we're not doing this.
37:14It's not the ball saying I'm not going in.
37:17Right?
37:17And so in the course of a regular season ups and downs ebbs and
37:21flows.
37:21You live through it.
37:22You go week in the playoffs where you go to a cold stretch.
37:27One, two, three Cancun exactly.
37:29That's game over.
37:30So it's that it's the ability the looking like the appearance
37:37of a rigidity of we're going to play like this no matter what
37:42that I think puts a little doubt sometimes in people's heads.
37:45Yeah, absolutely.
37:46Before we break out want to give a quick shout out to another
37:49one of our great sponsors game time game time has you covered
37:52with great ticket prices on all types of sporting events as well
37:56as concerts when I am thinking about going to an event that
37:59I am not covering which I kind of get out every now and then
38:04game time is the place that I like to go and the you know,
38:07the really cool thing about game time is this it's all in
38:10pricing for you know, so that when you get to the checkout
38:13and you ready to swipe that card, there's no gotcha moment.
38:18You the price that you see is a price that you pay.
38:20There aren't any add-ons and things like that.
38:23And before you even get there you get a panoramic view of
38:26your seat for the event before you get to the checkout.
38:29So you will know what that sideline is looking like before
38:31you actually have to pay for it.
38:33So those are some of the really cool things about game time
38:36and it's obviously the pricing is great.
38:38And all you have to do is download the game time app create
38:41an account and use the code CLNS and you get $20 off your
38:45first purchase terms apply again, download the app create
38:48an account and use the code CLNS for $20 off terms apply.
38:53What time is it game time and we are in the two-minute
38:58stretch here dos minutos of our show and I wanted to hit
39:04you up.
39:04I mean a little bit about just the trade deadline, which
39:06is going to be here before you know it Thursday.
39:10Yeah before you know it exactly.
39:13Well, I mean as someone who has been in the front office,
39:16you've been you know what this time of year is like on
39:18a way that most fans most media members don't what is it
39:21like for a front office when you are looking to like not
39:27make a radical change, but you just want to kind of just
39:29tweak a little bit just kind of you know, just a little
39:32like a haircut.
39:33Where's I don't need it all off just a little edge of
39:35edge of running just edge it off a little bit.
39:38What is that like?
39:39It's so if first and foremost, it's a lot of where it's
39:42an iceberg.
39:43It's an iceberg amount of work for maybe something that
39:47peaks ahead of the water.
39:48Maybe it doesn't even you never even see it right in terms
39:51of research.
39:52We're doing video are vast amount of video work.
39:55We're getting scouting reports both in person from scouts
39:59on the road and also off of the film and off of historical
40:03stuff.
40:03We're looking through everything that we can as far as
40:06statistical profiles and comps from guys in the past who
40:10have played certain roles for us.
40:12We're obviously the salary cap people know the contracts
40:15in and out and kind of what are the ramifications of this
40:19deal and so and by the way, it's multiple players because
40:24if you're doing like a multi-player deal, yeah, I'll give
40:28you an example 2008.
40:30We acquired Jason Richardson from the Charlotte Hornets
40:33for Boris Dia and and Roger Bell.
40:37We also got Jared Dudley in that deal.
40:39And so it's not just like, oh, yeah, I guess his number
40:42works.
40:42We're doing our homework on him too.
40:44And we're going back to when he worked out for us in
40:46pre-draft.
40:46What were the notes on that?
40:47What was his interview?
40:49Like what was his lunch like like all these things you got
40:51all this Intel for deals that may or may not happen, right?
40:56So you're doing the work especially me.
40:58I'm not negotiating.
40:59I'm not on the phone with anybody.
41:01My role was information guys.
41:03So I'm gathering all this information.
41:05I'm learning these guys inside and out and then you get
41:08to kind of this week and it's a lot of hurry up and wait.
41:11Yeah, they're negotiating.
41:12They're talking now.
41:13They might come up with a new name.
41:14Hey, what do we think of this guy?
41:15Oh, all right back in there.
41:17I gotta throw this in there and check this out and see
41:19what happens and da da da.
41:21And 90% I think that's even a low number 90% of deals
41:27never get made.
41:28Maybe it's 98%.
41:29Maybe it's 99.
41:30It's it's the large majority of things that are discussed
41:35never get made and I'm talking about everything from hey,
41:38what do you think of this?
41:39Nah to okay.
41:40I think we have a deal like that Steph Curry deal in 2009
41:44for us.
41:44It was like we thought it was done just like we thought
41:46and this is the Boston people get a kick out of this in
41:492007.
41:51We thought we got Kevin Garnett.
41:53I'll say I'll tell the story right now because the statute
41:55of limitations over everyone is retired, right?
41:582007 all-star game in Las Vegas.
42:05GQ magazine throws a party for Steve Nash because he'd won
42:08MVP the year before right at this party is Kevin Garnett.
42:13We're sitting there.
42:15I see Suns coaches drawing up on a napkin how we're going
42:20to use kg.
42:22Showing him kg is ready.
42:24Like I can't wait.
42:27It was a wrap.
42:27It was supposed to be Sean Marion going to Boston Al Jefferson
42:32and all that stuff that Boston sent them and so to go in
42:34there and maybe some pics and stuff kg comes to us or start
42:38a lineup was gonna be Steve Nash Roger Bell Grant Hill who
42:41we also knew we were going to sign in.
42:45At February 2007.
42:47I'm talking about what we write on our board.
42:48Our project to start a lineup every single time.
42:51Grant Hills is starting three.
42:53I remember asking like, how do we know?
42:54How are we so sure that we're sure?
42:57Wow.
42:58I'm artist out of bars are for Kevin Garnett's are fine.
43:02Done deal done deal done deal until not so done deal because
43:07Sean Marion's agent says, hey, Danny, and if you want Sean
43:10Marion, you got to commit to signing him for full max
43:14extension, right?
43:16Or else he'll opt out and leave because he had a he had a
43:19ETO on his deal, right?
43:21And and Danny loves Sean because I was I was about to I
43:24was about to say loves gone.
43:26That was the one guy that Danny never ever wavered for when
43:31you ask him like who you know from a workout standpoint
43:34that comes to mind on Marion was that guy.
43:39He was dying.
43:40He like that.
43:41It's so to me.
43:42It's such a weird fork in the road in history when I especially
43:47whenever I'm in Boston, I see kg there coming back and everyone
43:50London they love him so much.
43:52He loves that and I'm looking at it.
43:54Y'all don't even know he wasn't even the main target.
43:57It was it couldn't even they were like, oh, we can't get
44:00kg, but we might be able to get Sean Marion because Danny
44:03loves Sean and so they that's what Dan Fagan God rest his
44:09soul demanded and Danny said the best we can do is three
44:12years of 45 million.
44:14So it's 15 15 15 Sean, I think was supposed to make 17 the
44:19last year of his deal and Dan Fagan said there's no way Sean
44:22Marion is taking a pay cut.
44:25So if you if you acquire us, that's cool.
44:27We'll play one year and then we'll opt out and Danny said
44:30I can't I can't give up my entire future Al Jefferson and
44:35Marcus Banks and Gerald green and all these young talent.
44:38I can't give all this young talent for a guy who gonna walk
44:41so the deal dies.
44:42So then Danny reengages like kg.
44:46What would it take?
44:47So you gotta get someone else in here.
44:48So then like, okay, we got our top five pick in the lottery
44:52Seattle.
44:53They're trying to move on sale.
44:56Presley has his own ideas of how he wants to build his
44:59organization.
45:00Ray Allen is an expensive vet who doesn't fit the timeline
45:04to get Ray Allen come back to Minnesota.
45:07All right, Kevin Garnett.
45:07Is it good now?
45:08You got Paul Pierce and Ray Allen and Katie says, okay,
45:12and the rest is history and the rest is history.
45:15So in other words shot two million dollars.
45:19Yep, and by the way, and here's the worst part and again,
45:23I don't this none of this is on Sean.
45:24This is his agent who's negotiating who's doing his job.
45:28He's doing his thing was I get my clients top dollar and
45:32he is damn good at it and he was damn good at damn good,
45:35but kind of he kind of sit the bed on that one because Sean
45:39ends up getting traded in the Shaquille O'Neal deal to Miami
45:43Miami and trades in the Toronto Toronto lets his deal expire.
45:47He signs in Dallas for a lot less than 15 million dollars
45:51a year.
45:52Now he was a championship in Dallas.
45:54So I'm sure Sean is like, you know what?
45:55I made a lot of money and I got a ring and maybe one day
45:59I will go in the Hall of Fame.
46:00So it all worked out for Sean.
46:02Yeah, but yeah, I was I look at KG and I look at Steph Curry
46:07and obviously there's no way both of those things would
46:10have happened.
46:11But those are the two happen one of the one of the two
46:14happen.
46:14I'm doing this podcast interview with like a big shiny thing
46:18on my finger.
46:18Like yeah, you know things just happen.
46:22Yeah, because we're so smart.
46:23Yeah, you know things just fell into place.
46:26Yeah.
46:27Yeah, man.
46:30Oh man.
46:30Wow, that that's that's crazy.
46:33That is crazy.
46:35Well, listen, this has been awesome.
46:38I mean, we're gonna have to figure out we're going to try
46:40to figure out we can do this during the week when quantity
46:42and Gary can be around and we can afford to have them on
46:44the show too.
46:45Because they like I said, we get ready to crazy.
46:48Well, we get them on night nights and we yeah, we get
46:51them on a nice weekend.
46:53The off peak hours.
46:55Exactly.
46:56Exactly.
46:57I mean, let the people know where they can check you out
46:59and get some more of your insight on the various platforms
47:03that you operate on now.
47:04All right, easiest thing on socials at Darth Amin.
47:07I'm on all of them.
47:08I'm on threads.
47:08I'm on Instagram.
47:10I'm on Twitter kind of but I'm there right as far as listening
47:16to me serious XMNBA radio every Sunday.
47:19I'm on with Jason Jackson 10 a.m.
47:21To 1 p.m.
47:21Eastern where we do a great show kind of highlighting showcasing
47:26the entire NBA looking forward looking back to the night
47:29before everything.
47:30So it's every Sunday again 10 a.m.
47:32To 1 p.m.
47:32Eastern on serious XMNBA radio and then during the week take
47:39your pick.
47:39I've got the basketball Illuminati podcast that I do with
47:42Tom Havestro.
47:42I've got oddball that I do with Izzy Gutierrez.
47:47My man Izzy.
47:48That's my guy.
47:49Me and Izzy.
47:50Yeah, and then we got obviously the Dan Levitard show that
47:52I do with Dan Levitard and Stu Gatz during the week.
47:56You can find all those things on YouTube or wherever you
47:58get podcasts.
47:59Absolutely, and please folks check check out his work.
48:02I can tell you right now.
48:03It is well worth the listen and all of it is because I it's
48:08it's that's how like I'm just randomly surfing a dial and
48:12it's like every damn station.
48:14I'm on serious that has some type of sports content where
48:17there's talk.
48:18I'm going to come across mean at some point that day, which
48:22I like that though, man.
48:26I do.
48:26So one of the shows I fill in for it's not my show.
48:29It's Jackson show.
48:30He does a Kirk Morrison, which is for progress and that
48:33airs once a week.
48:34I want to see on Thursdays on NBA radio and NFL radio and
48:38it's it's sports talk, but from the realm of three letters
48:44that I guess are all the rage nowadays, which is diversity
48:49and inclusion, right?
48:50Dei and so we're going to tackle those stories and talk
48:55about those stories that quite frankly don't talk get talked
48:57about anywhere else every show every channel every podcast
49:01is so consumed with the day-to-day operations of whatever
49:04league or sport they're covering.
49:05It's hard to fit in some of these other stories.
49:07And so Jackson Kirk Morrison do a great job of highlighting
49:11some of those things and kind of explaining.
49:13I I do that show.
49:15I fill in in when when either Kirk or Jax can't make it,
49:18but I was I'm learning either through the interviews or
49:21kind of like the topics that we're talking about.
49:23I learned about a bunch of stuff.
49:25For example, the the college players were suing to be recognized
49:33as employees.
49:35Yeah, I learned so much about that case just prepping to
49:39do the show.
49:40And so I can only imagine for a listener how rewarding
49:43it must be.
49:44No, it's it's good content.
49:46I would strongly encourage people after you listen to the
49:50big three NBA podcasts and swing over to Sears and check
49:53out that that that content as well because it really is
49:55some good stuff before we get out of here.
