00:00:00All right he's back baby. National NFL insider for the athletic I didn't waste any time getting
00:00:19straight to the title puts that big grin on his face Jeff how your friend in mind. Longtime
00:00:23former Patriots beat writer as we said now gone national and we are going to talk about
00:00:27what stuff is probably you know people have wanted for the last 48 hours Josh McDaniels
00:00:31is back the Patriots have a defensive coordinator oh yeah Mike Frabel was hired as a head coach
00:00:35less than two weeks ago and we'll get into the granular part of that that we may or may
00:00:39not have another episode 24 hours after this to really get into Josh's system what I want
00:00:43to do now is a little bit of both so to get someone who understands the Patriots but also
00:00:48has a national perspective we have Jeff back Jeff I I don't really you tell us where we're
00:00:54going to start today it doesn't even have to be anything I just talked about it's been
00:00:57so long I feel like this would be a good host move guest gets to dictate right off the top
00:01:02where do you want to go wow I wasn't prepared for that you probably don't want to talk about
00:01:07the Red Sox offseason or the fact that the Celtics almost just lost to a G League team
00:01:13last night or that the Bruins are going to be relegated to I don't know the fifth division
00:01:19in Europe so let's just start with some Patriots and Rable stuff okay here's here's what I'm
00:01:26most curious about I would say on a personal and podcast level you know the Patriots fired
00:01:31Gerard Mayo as fast as they can they hire Mike Rable just about as fast as they can
00:01:36it take a little bit longer with Josh McDaniels and Terrell Williams but they're now both
00:01:40in the fold and officially announced yesterday we are recording today Thursday morning what
00:01:46is all of that movement and shift and change done for the Patriots perspective across the
00:01:52league their image their credibility it's added quite a bit because I mean you know
00:01:58how far the Patriots had fallen toward the end of the season I mean it got to a point
00:02:02where or I shouldn't say it got to a point it so quickly changed the narrative within
00:02:09the building of like okay Gerard Mayo is absolutely getting a second season to oh my goodness
00:02:14like something has to happen here like this is not working and it's not going to get better
00:02:18and everybody around the league knew it and there's always going to be some grace some
00:02:24understanding of how hard this job is especially for a first-time coach or even in the other
00:02:29side of the operation the first time GM you know these guys have a lot of empathy for
00:02:35for what these first-time guys are going through whether it's another building or what have
00:02:39you but there's still an understanding of from afar this this just doesn't look right
00:02:45you know it was the the avoidable self-inflicted mistakes that Gerard Mayo kept making and
00:02:51you know sometimes it was at the podium on Sunday evenings or Monday mornings as you
00:02:56are well aware oh yes thank you yeah I completely forgot until you mentioned it I just figured
00:03:03you'd enjoy that trip down memory lane you know talking to people over the last week
00:03:08of the regular season when it that story you know really made its way closer to my
00:03:15workload you know of course that was something that started with you much earlier but it
00:03:20was pretty clear that the Patriots needed to part ways and the I thought it was important
00:03:26trying probably rehashing some stuff that you've since discussed but like I thought
00:03:29it was important that Robert Kraft took ownership of of putting Mayo in a bad situation and
00:03:35understanding that which was absolutely the case and that was necessary for him to say
00:03:40and then you know again just a lot of side eyes at what was going on in New England and
00:03:45then you bring in Mike Rable who everybody knows is going to immediately change the culture
00:03:49it's going to change the way things are done within the building with just team building
00:03:56and how you handle stuff around the league or what have you so this is just you know
00:04:03it's tough when you are an opponent or you know it takes two sides to make a deal and
00:04:09all that stuff like all these guys within these other buildings have relationships with
00:04:12everybody else around the league or at least the good ones do it can be frustrating to
00:04:16deal with a team that really isn't heading in a tangible direction or in a straight line
00:04:23direction because you don't know what their goals and priorities are so I think just it
00:04:30was just something where it was a big big culture shift and I think everybody understood
00:04:36by the end of it that a change needed to be made and the Patriots saw that as well obviously
00:04:41and so it was one thing for the Patriots to hire Mike Rable right who you mentioned brings
00:04:46instant credibility winning record as a head coach talked a lot about Mike the last couple
00:04:49of weeks and we'll get straight into Josh here who they officially hired yesterday and
00:04:54announced and Tuesday first reported by Kirk Manahan and confirmed by a bunch of other
00:04:57people within the market that hey Josh is back to me if you set the name and the resume
00:05:03in the history aside which is obviously all very relevant and important and you just ask
00:05:07yourself okay describe the ideal coach for Drake May going into year two right because
00:05:13this is where the offensive coordinator discussion starts who can take care of and develop my
00:05:17quarterback you would say a guy who's developed quarterbacks before I was been a coordinator
00:05:21before and a guy who has shown flexibility and adaptability with the scheme to meet his
00:05:26available roster talent in the modern times well check check check like that's Josh McDaniel
00:05:32so I'm high on the McDaniels hire I've written about it today scale of 1 to 10 what would
00:05:37you give it a 10 absolutely it's a 10 just mid-December I started to hear that really
00:05:45I mean we'll and maybe we'll get more into this later but when McDaniels decided he wasn't
00:05:51going with Belichick to the college side it was pretty obvious that he was at the hip
00:05:58with Mike Rabel and you know you need to go through a lot of things before you can make
00:06:02that higher possible and McDaniels had to kind of do his own thing to understand his
00:06:07options as well but I thought in terms of who they could bring back or who they could
00:06:12bring in I mean McDaniels was priority one two and three because you weren't I you know
00:06:19I don't think I think people are looking at Nick Kaley with the Rams obviously a former
00:06:25patriot you know he's not quite yet in that spot where a Kevin O'Connell or Liam Cohen
00:06:32had been toward the end of their Rams 10 years where it was like okay it's a hundred percent
00:06:37their time to be an offensive coordinator you're not getting that guy or even you know
00:06:42sort of like a Mike McDaniel toward his the end of his run with the Niners you know there
00:06:47wasn't that ready-made coordinator from that style system where you could just plug and
00:06:54play and just say okay well this thing is you're all of a sudden going to have Rams
00:06:57East out here or Shanahan East out here so bringing in McDaniels was the absolute best
00:07:05case scenario and I would I think it's important to differentiate this year's search from last
00:07:11year's search and say okay well you know I understand the skepticism and that was my
00:07:17big critique last year too and I don't want people to think I'm a hypocrite for this because
00:07:20you know I did think that hiring Mayo was a good decision I didn't like the process
00:07:27so I'm fine taking the loss on the Mayo hire but I was sitting here with you probably a
00:07:34year ago saying they owed it to themselves to have a much more thorough process and that
00:07:39was before I recognized that okay they had the thing the clause in the contract the Mayo
00:07:43was going to be the successor the process wasn't good I understood why they made the
00:07:47hire this year it's not like Kraft is saying I'm going to go back to my old friends and
00:07:51get Vrabel and McDaniels now you could say part of that is true with Vrabel but I don't
00:07:56think that's the case with McDaniels I think McDaniels truly was you take out his history
00:08:01as it relates to the organization and the colors that he's worn over the course of the
00:08:05majority of his career you take all that out he was still the best man for this job in
00:08:09my opinion yeah and in the job or excuse me the point about the market and who else
00:08:15you could have hired is a really good one because people experience this and we all
00:08:18know it whether it's a draft or free agency you're like oh you got to take a quarterback
00:08:23okay well who's available like you if you don't have great options maybe you need to
00:08:27move elsewhere and so with Josh McDaniels you could tell me oh I don't want Josh and
00:08:31I didn't like his play calling that's fine I'm not telling you I need to feel but I would
00:08:35ask who did you want to hire in his place because to your point there are not all of
00:08:38these hotshot knew whether they're from a McVay system or Shanahan or Kevin O'Connell
00:08:43around and the one that has supposedly risen up the ranks Grant Udinski 28 years old interviewed
00:08:49on Sunday and this is a guy who had only been with the Vikings now for three years in the
00:08:54first one he was assistant to the head coach he was the Dwight Schrute of special projects
00:08:58for Kevin O'Connell like that's that's not a guy in my opinion even if he is going to
00:09:03be the Theo Epstein of offensive coordinators you know maybe gets hired later this cycle
00:09:07or next year like congrats to him he might be a genius all the best right now for what
00:09:12the Patriots need is not an up-and-comer you dealt with all of that and experience a head
00:09:17coach and defensive coordinator and GM and to some degree offensive coordinator with
00:09:22the plate calling all last year you saw how that went so this is not just doing the opposite
00:09:26of that it's realizing that when you bring in names like Mike Rabel and Josh McDaniels
00:09:31there's a credibility from the outside but there's also a sense of I have all the answers
00:09:35on the inside because this is my favorite stat inspired by a long time Lister Carlos
00:09:40of the experience at variable McDaniels had in their respective roles coming into this
00:09:46job a year ago your head coach offensive and defensive coordinators had a combined 19 years
00:09:54of experience in those roles okay Mike Rabel and Josh McDaniels top that alone for getting
00:10:00Terrell Williams who's going to be a first-time NFL coordinator this upcoming season and together
00:10:06when you take all of their coaching experience that's 45 years so what this says is Drake
00:10:10may if you have a question there's going to be an answer and they're going to be people
00:10:13that they surround him with and the rest of the offense that are just a little bit more
00:10:16adult issue in the room so to me I don't know if he was a 10 certainly a 9 or higher is
00:10:20where I'm going with this Josh McDaniels for all of that that we just kind of laid out
00:10:24yeah I think I say 10 because I like the higher I like the credentials I like what he's done
00:10:30but it was also in again I just go back to the fact that he was their best option it
00:10:36wasn't like you were going to convince Ben Johnson to come be the offensive like rules
00:10:41aside Ben Johnson wasn't coming to be your offensive coordinator which I got a few times
00:10:46and wanted to text you be like hey you know a old college buddy like see up for taking
00:10:50the hometown discount in terms of dollars and promotion oh no because he might be a
00:10:54head coach within any any time now oh of course not but there are people wishing for him to
00:10:58come back which yeah and I don't think you know I've seen it on on Twitter a little bit
00:11:03like I don't think people realize it's not necessarily as easy as saying all right I'm
00:11:07going to give my offensive coordinator five million dollars and he's just going to come
00:11:11and work with this hotshot rookie quarterback like it's not that easy like these guys as
00:11:15they're trying to figure out 99% of them want to be head coaches and they owe it to themselves
00:11:21to take the best path to become a head coach so there's some uncertainty here and if you
00:11:25got a good situation somewhere else you're not necessarily tripping over yourself to
00:11:28leave so it's it's there's a lot that goes to it and then the other part too is like
00:11:34you know the criticism of like okay Josh McDaniels system is Tom Brady for you know what yeah
00:11:40for a large part of his career it was but let's not ignore the fact that Josh McDaniels
00:11:46did a pretty decent job I don't use I'm going to use this one because we're going in chronological
00:11:49order but he did a decent job in 08 and granted that 08 team was a Super Bowl caliber roster
00:11:57let's more recently 2016 getting Jimmy Garoppolo ready when Tom Brady was dealing with the
00:12:03suspension Garoppolo comes out the first six quarters of the season were absolutely terrific
00:12:09and you want to look at the narrative of like oh my goodness you might be able to trade
00:12:13Tom Brady Jimmy Garoppolo looks so good and then he gets injured and we saw what happened
00:12:18there but then Jacoby Brissette comes in after not taking a first team rep in practice
00:12:22for like a month and Josh McDaniels changes the offense on the fly you look at 2020 where
00:12:29McDaniels reshaped the offense again remember added some go-go stuff from Brennan Marion's
00:12:34offense and you know the new Sacramento State head coach the does a lot of good stuff like
00:12:40weird staggered and you got all the QB stuff like going yes the Cam Newton stuff gets Mac
00:12:45Jones ready Mac Jones had his best season of his career with McDaniels so this is a
00:12:51guy who it's not necessarily the scheme this is and yeah he has a scheme everybody has
00:12:56a scheme but McDaniels is really good at formulating the scheme around the players you know you
00:13:01talk about plays not players and that whole cliche it's important to have an offensive
00:13:05coordinator who has the self-awareness to understand that because a lot of guys are
00:13:09going to say well look I can run the hundred greatest plays that you're going to see on
00:13:12the field today but if you repped them all week and your players don't understand what
00:13:16they're doing those plays aren't worth crap so you need to you need to have a guy who
00:13:21who can fit or who can bring out a maximize guys biggest areas of strength and put that
00:13:29on the field and McDaniels has a track record of doing that now you talk about the kid in
00:13:34Minnesota whose name I'm losing off the top of my head here okay there's also a candidate
00:13:41to be the Seahawks offensive coordinator certainly a highly respected rising coach
00:13:47but you look at what Vrabel wants to do when you talk about the instant credibility
00:13:51and the culture change you know Vrabel is going to come in and he's going to take this CEO approach
00:13:56and he's going to make sure that he's got his hands in as many and as many pots as possible
00:14:01but he can't do that if he's babysitting his first time play caller at offensive coordinator
00:14:06you can't have that important of a position and you're trying to groom a second year quarterback
00:14:13and a first time play caller that takes away a lot of what your effectiveness could be in
00:14:17some other areas of the field now he can focus a lot on defense with Williams there as a first
00:14:23time coordinator but a guy who has a lot of potential but at least now you can say okay
00:14:28Vrabel is a defensive guy at heart he can gravitate toward the defensive side while
00:14:32Josh McDaniels just runs the offense and you don't have to think twice about it you know there's
00:14:36a lot of freedom that comes with having that that going on within your building and just being able
00:14:43to focus or to to prioritize what these guys know they can do best well let's be clear too about what
00:14:51has been the ball and chain around the Patriots ankle for the last three years that that sunk
00:14:57them in three consecutive seasons it's been bad coaching and worse offense the Matt Patricia
00:15:01experiment the dysfunctional staff Belichick's sister around Bill O'Brien who again you know
00:15:06hand up his hire I was praising as I think this brings credibility and stability and just some
00:15:11you know someone who knows what they're doing uh in 2023 but no one around him knew what that
00:15:15was going to do because Belichick hand-picked his assistants from all different places around
00:15:19the world and then last year Alex Van Pelt and his group even though it was a much bigger staff
00:15:24was hardly an upgrade over that 2023 offense so with McDaniels who left and started this kind of
00:15:31cascade of just failure on the offensive side of the ball like that year in 2021 I think it's
00:15:36important to remember like a there were six in scoring they were top 10 by success rate EPA per
00:15:42play all these advanced metrics Matt Jones was a rookie quarterback that's what got him hired
00:15:47in Las Vegas it wasn't the Brady portion of his career which had been over two years earlier and
00:15:52the same thing with 08 when you bring up Matt Castle that's what got him hired finally do a
00:15:56head coaching job it wasn't the coaching he had done with Brady so when you go what has he done
00:16:00without Tom Brady well we just kind of outlined that but he's gotten two head coaching jobs
00:16:04now the follow-up point would be well how'd that go Callahan I'd be like oh they sucked he was bad
00:16:09he was very bad I've made this analogy plenty of times of if you're a head coach you're a principal
00:16:13of a high school if you're an offensive or defensive coordinator you're a department head
00:16:17you do the hands-on teaching you set the course of work for the rest of the department and how
00:16:21you're going to proceed Josh McDaniels sucks as a principal can't run the whole show doesn't work
00:16:27but when he's hands-on teaching that man can spin some Shakespeare so to me it's not only just
00:16:32understanding how and why he got to those different positions and also what happened
00:16:35with a little bit more context it's it's a great fit locally uh his skill set the experience like
00:16:41I said 14 years for him already as an offensive coordinator you're not going to find that with
00:16:45guys who are on the market and been successful before six years for Mike Rabel like it's just
00:16:49everything has what I call the baseline competency that okay this is the Florida before it was way
00:16:56down below as we all found out together okay this Patriots team is not going to have as many
00:17:01turnovers or penalties or just slap on the forehead kind of mistakes you have moving forward
00:17:07now to spin this forward you and I both know Josh has remained local since getting fired in Las Vegas
00:17:13almost 18 months ago have you heard anything else about what he might do to kind of spin this forward
00:17:19or adjust his offense or tweak any part of his kind of approach here uh not not anything like
00:17:25x's and o's or technical wise I just know that yeah I mean he he kept his roots in the New England
00:17:32area and this that's why this was viewed I mean I I talked to people who are familiar with the
00:17:38situation again going back a month plus at this point and not only you know I had somebody who
00:17:46told me pretty early somebody again very familiar with the situation like I'd bet on McDaniels
00:17:50getting this job but then there was also a bit of a sentimentality aspect of it too where it was
00:17:56like people were really hoping the McDaniels was going to get this job they knew he wanted it uh
00:18:02they they knew what the area has meant to him and his family you know there is there's a big part
00:18:08of that too and I I can understand you know people might roll their eyes at this portion of it I don't
00:18:13care because I'm saying it because it's important because I've heard it time and again from a lot
00:18:17of different people the family aspect matters and when you are moving around or when you've been
00:18:23fired or when you've been publicly shamed or what have you you know there's a part that just you
00:18:30want your family to have some peace and this area represents that for McDaniels and what this area
00:18:37has meant to again his family the extension of of who he is as a person so this is there's just
00:18:43there's a lot of reasons to like why this was happening and I'm not saying Robert Kraft needed
00:18:48to hire McDaniels so his family could be happy I know how I know how certain things can get kind
00:18:54of taken and twisted I'm not saying it because of that um but there's there's a lot of there's a lot
00:18:59of stuff to you know and I kind of want to back up too there's one part that's that is important and
00:19:04I wanted to mention it maybe we were going to get to this later but I didn't want this to like escape
00:19:08my my big dumb smooth brain here um there's hey I'm the one with the smooth brain let's not get
00:19:13that twisted okay well for like six months out of the year I do too that's today we've we've let it
00:19:19go um the the biggest criticism I heard of Mayo and just his inexperience with the job is that
00:19:29as he was coming up as a position coach and wasn't quite to the level of a coordinator because he
00:19:34wasn't really calling the plays or installing uh the defense he wasn't really involved in
00:19:41building the week-to-week game plan as a position coach with Belichick staff so when he took over
00:19:51as a head coach he wasn't really at the point he didn't have the the fundamental or the foundational
00:19:57experience of okay this is how we install the game this is how we started on Monday this is
00:20:02how we progress it on Tuesday and kind of build at it throughout the week so when things start to
00:20:07go sideways whether it's late in the week in practice or the Saturday walk through or Sunday
00:20:12during the games he hasn't necessarily had that foundational experience to say okay I know what
00:20:18I can do to kind of change this this is you know that's why when you talk about a guy who doesn't
00:20:23necessarily have experience you know we we can sit here on our couches and say oh call a time out or
00:20:29oh this isn't working do this or that it's such it's such a different thing when you're on the
00:20:34sideline and those decisions have to run through you now you look at Vrabel and McDaniels and those
00:20:40guys are going to sit there and say not only have they done it as head coaches as coordinators uh
00:20:45not only do they have extensive histories as position successful uh positional coaches in
00:20:50various backgrounds now these guys have done all of the foundational game planning work that is
00:20:57going to be important for them uh to kind of get through the week and just to kind of manage
00:21:02things at a level that had eroded to a great deal last season yeah the grunt work you know and like
00:21:09Gerard had five years of coaching experience so no no big surprise year six it's a disaster again
00:21:15I didn't see it but in retrospect you're like oh yeah this was a bad decision because he also
00:21:19couldn't surround himself with a network of people that you can go they have those answers and that's
00:21:23true of Josh in two senses number one is the scheme which kind of collapsed under its own
00:21:29weight and complexity by the end because it was just too broad has all the answers built in like
00:21:33the base of that system is to say no matter what the defense throws at us we have something we can
00:21:38check to a solution for this if you can identify whatever the defense is we get to that we execute
00:21:42we have the upper hand I think Drake May is ready for that type of offense and they'll give it to
00:21:46him but also from being a personal assistant to a defensive assistant to them working with
00:21:50quarterbacks coordinator head coach coordinator head coach coordinator again does have all the
00:21:55answers from that experience where there's no thought process of oh should we do this or do
00:21:59that just boom it's reflexive and it's not always correct it doesn't make it right but to go back
00:22:04to my point of like the the difference between being a head coach and that success is not always
00:22:09connected to how you are as a coordinator Mike Fable had one year as a coordinator at any level
00:22:14of football when he was coaching 2017 with the Texans do you remember just off the top of your
00:22:21flat head where they ranked in points allowed that season when Mike Fable was a defensive coordinator
00:22:27for the Houston Texans in 2017 uh I'm yeah I'm gonna take a safe bet and say 16th okay they
00:22:34were dead last they stopped they allowed over 400 points that season and then the next obviously few
00:22:41months he got a job as a head coach of the Tennessee Titans and he inherited 917 they go
00:22:46nine and seven again but that was the first of four winning seasons that he had so for people
00:22:50who think Josh McDaniels has lost his marbles and I might be just arguing against a straw man here
00:22:54I don't know I'm here to tell you this is a good hire it was the best one they probably could have
00:22:58made and by definition you could not have done better than best now again we were saying similar
00:23:03things about Bill O'Brien maybe this will work out a year to go yada yada the question is then
00:23:07who can Josh McDaniels bring around who is Jeff Heard about maybe folks who would come work for
00:23:12Josh McDaniels in New England again we'll find out more after the break happy championship weekend
00:23:17I've got a question for you do you think Jane Daniels will throw for at least one yard one
00:23:23single yard Sunday in the NFC championship game in Philadelphia yeah me too well if you think so
00:23:30you're halfway to a winning prize picks lineup this week it's that simple because this championship
00:23:36weekend prize picks is giving away a free square in your lineup where you pick two to six player
00:23:41stat projections more or less on each file it away boom win some money on the back end and the way
00:23:47you can do this is if you add that Jaden Daniels square for more or less and be honest we're all
00:23:52picking more than half a passing yard there's your first square all you have to do is pick a second
00:23:57one at America's number one daily fantasy sports game and it could be Patrick Mahomes for more or
00:24:01less than 253 passing yards in the AFC championship game it could be Travis Kelsey more or less than
00:24:0769 receiving yards in the AFC championship game or a Saquon Barkley touchdown if he rushes for
00:24:12more than half a touchdown boom in the NFC championship game and Jane Daniels completes one
00:24:17stinking forward pass you won over at prize picks where they're giving away millions of dollars in
00:24:22championship weekend and the super bowl so lock in right now download the prize picks app and use
00:24:28code CLNS to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup you can use this money with
00:24:35demo mastercard you name it quick and easy whatever way you want to do it download the app today use
00:24:40code CLNS to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup with Jaden Daniels more than half
00:24:47a passing yard to pick any other player any other stat any other projection and lock it in but only
00:24:52at prize picks run your game all right I teed you up and any names again off the top of
00:24:59smooth head that the Patriots my hires assistance because we all hear we all know okay the most
00:25:05important hire for defensive head coach is an offensive coordinator to me regardless of whatever
00:25:09background that head coach comes from quarterbacks coach offensive line coach are right up there next
00:25:15to coordinators your most important hires anything you've heard in and around there
00:25:19uh no I hope you got your ad money there uh because I don't have anything great for you um
00:25:25uh that's that's a heck of an empty tease I've heard some names I've poked around I've I'm not
00:25:31at the point where I want to throw those names out there uh because I just don't I don't think
00:25:36it'd be responsible on my part I've you know I'll say this I'm asking for some trust if you if you
00:25:43have it in me great if you don't whatever I understand I've spoken to people who believe
00:25:49the job is attractive some are able to to throw their hat in the ring others are not for contractual
00:25:56reasons or maybe they're just in a spot where they're just happy um I I just I can't I'm sorry
00:26:02I can't give you any names right now just because I I can't do that to the people I've spoken to
00:26:06understandable um I would say this as they build out their offensive line coach and quarterbacks
00:26:13room they might not hire an official quarterbacks coach because we know Josh has often functioned as
00:26:17his own quarterbacks coach as a coordinator I don't think there's any issue with that and my
00:26:22understanding was last week because I've said here in other places that the next offensive coordinator
00:26:27now obviously Josh will be able to kind of fill out his own staff um Thomas Brown is a name that
00:26:32is new which you don't hear a whole lot of new names in New England they can look at the head
00:26:36coach the last two tries and is uh now new offensive coordinator for Mike Grable very
00:26:41familiar faces uh Thomas Brown is a guy who's been a highly successful running backs coach
00:26:46college level NFL rose rapidly up with Sean McVay obviously an offensive coordinator with the Bears
00:26:51last year the Panthers before that neither of those students go particularly well but as someone
00:26:56who might be available pending whatever his interest is in other places run game coordinator
00:27:01brings some different wrinkles who knows what Josh is is up for he will have a major influence
00:27:07on the people that work for him uh as everyone of course works under Mike Grable that's a name
00:27:11to keep in mind I would look at to lead the folks on a little bit more than you have but
00:27:16for the same reasons of you don't want to betray any trust from people that are like yeah I'd like
00:27:20to be up for this job but I can't say that otherwise I'm kind of breaking some rules
00:27:24contractually people who have been here before with Josh in Las Vegas and that seems obvious
00:27:29but that's not always the case when your boss gets fired midway through the season as Josh was
00:27:34with the Raiders because then you might go I'm never working for him again so yeah maybe and
00:27:39this isn't something I've heard so this isn't don't trust being betrayed Mick Lombardi was
00:27:43the receivers coach uh back in 2021 here and since left and is working as an offensive assistant with
00:27:48the 49ers so you've got that little scheme diversity you've got someone who's got local
00:27:53connections and the receivers in 2021 Kendrick Bourne had a career year 800 yards first year
00:27:58in a system um so there's familiarity there there's trust there's understanding will be
00:28:02Mick Lombardi Thomas Brown uh Carmen Priscilla was his offensive line coach in Vegas and then
00:28:07just now with the Giants like names like that we'll see but it is really important to see the
00:28:13fact that there is interest can you offer anything more around there like people who are
00:28:17unassociated with Josh people who have some kind of relationships with Josh or is this
00:28:23where is that interest lie around around the league and with whom
00:28:28he's he's a very highly respected teacher that's the you nailed that word uh earlier
00:28:33in the podcast he's he's an incredible football mind um who was somebody was telling me
00:28:41recently uh like last summer they were like you know I learned more about
00:28:46football from working with Josh than anybody else I've ever worked with and uh he's so people do
00:28:53want to work with him you mentioned Thomas Brown that would be another home run higher um I know
00:28:57he's he's he's been a guy who's been discussed for probably three four years as a future head
00:29:03coach hasn't quite gotten there obviously was the interim with the Bears uh has had some he's just
00:29:09he's had some tough situations since leaving the Rams uh Carolina that staff got wiped out
00:29:15obviously the Bears had Ibraflux get fired we'll see where he goes I mean he's got a lot of friends
00:29:19around the league he's got a lot of um a lot of different background with with schemes that he's
00:29:25able to run but yeah like you said like if McDaniels could bring him in that would be a
00:29:31huge get because this is a guy who you know he's he's a very very well respected coach
00:29:37communicator teacher and you know if they were to somehow pull off Thomas Brown that would be
00:29:43that would be a big time get I I don't know if he's gonna get a coordinator shot
00:29:47uh there are still some other jobs that need to get filled too so we'll see yeah I I would
00:29:52be surprised at this point which is why I have a little bit more confidence that he could be in
00:29:57play um and it's not a knock on you know what you're trying to deal with in Chicago which
00:30:01their offensive line for most of the season was as bad as the Patriots and you also had a rookie
00:30:05quarterback a guy who was not as willing to put his past uh bad habits past him and was running
00:30:11around trying to play Superman so like there was a lot there here starts to do an interim head
00:30:14coach still a good young coach just might take a little bit more time before he's an established
00:30:18coordinator who gets a couple years run we have not talked about Terrell Williams who I still don't
00:30:23know a whole lot about except for the fact that he was with Mike Rabel for six seasons in Tennessee
00:30:28um Williams has said we want violent players up front which I don't know if there's anything more
00:30:32defensive line coach than just saying gd we need some violent players that's the only description
00:30:37I have he's credited Mike Rabel for helping him connect more with his players since gone on to be
00:30:43with the Lions and Dan Campbell um who I you know I don't think he's one to BS and I think that's
00:30:49part of the appeal of Dan Campbell but when he says I think Terrell Williams is the best defensive
00:30:54line coach in the league I don't know what else you would say about the guy you hired to be your
00:30:59defensive line coach so I'm I'd say I'm pretty confident Terrell Williams is up there you can
00:31:05also look at Jeffrey Simmons and Aidan Hutchinson and uh McNeil and and all these guys but the point
00:31:10is he's well respected he's been around he's been in the NFL since 2012 also worked with the Raiders
00:31:14and the Dolphins is there anything to add there and then we'll get to Mike Rabel stories we got a
00:31:18mailbag yeah uh no I would just add just a little bit you know the story that you tweeted out
00:31:25yesterday just the violence quote I mean that was perfect you couple that with the fact that he's
00:31:30coaching for Dan Campbell as he's saying that and it's like oh these guys were made for each other
00:31:35but I think there's a lot of similarities between the way that Dan Campbell and Mike
00:31:39Rabel like to go about their business that I think Williams is going to fit well with Rabel
00:31:43too all right he already has fit well with Rabel excuse me uh but he will continue to fit well with
00:31:47Rabel and I think look that's interesting as you're a defensive line coach you do somewhat
00:31:53you have your hand in a lot of the front seven now he's going to have to be able to expand his
00:31:57reach into kind of the back five or you know the the secondary of course there's going to be a
00:32:03learning curve but again I think it goes back to our previous point Rabel doesn't have to babysit
00:32:07anybody on offense so he can help Williams kind of grow into his role because Rabel has done it
00:32:14too you know I just remember actually kind of all not necessarily full circle because I'm not on the
00:32:19Pat's beat anymore but the very first story I wrote after Nesson hired me to cover the Patriots for
00:32:25$25 a week back in 2009 was that the Patriots traded Mike Rabel and Matt Castle to the Chiefs
00:32:32so yeah I just I remember you know I was around the locker room a little bit as I was a freelancer
00:32:39for the Boston Metro and some other places and from 06 to 08 very sporadically but I remember
00:32:45Rabel and just uh how how respected he was from his teammates and remember the teammates in that era
00:32:53and the coaching staff which was a veteran coaching staff and just how much Rabel knew the playbook
00:32:59like he was said at that time to know the playbook better than any any player Belichick
00:33:03had ever had and you can since throw Hightower, McCordy, Mayo into that mix as well now obviously
00:33:11one thing doesn't necessarily lead to coaching success at least right away
00:33:15but you know this is Rabel's knowledge institutional knowledge I don't even know
00:33:21whatever I've gotten so far into a tangent I don't remember what my point was anymore
00:33:25Mike Rabel smart says Jeff and my big stupid smooth brain well here's the thing I want to
00:33:32ask you one thing and then you know you got to visit with him in Tennessee as part of these
00:33:36training camp tours that no one else in this podcast is definitely jealous of at all and I
00:33:42want to bring people in the room you know you're sitting across from Mike or you have different
00:33:45interactions and look from our conversations sometimes not all of these are good so it's not
00:33:52just to say that every coach you meet with is the smartest greatest best coach you know ever
00:33:57I think obviously Mike has established himself as a good coach but before we get to that personal
00:34:00experience what do you think in the you know two weeks now basically since he's been hired
00:34:07that has been overlooked about Rabel or the changes that are coming into England or just
00:34:12under discussed again either about him individually or his impact here soon to be felt in Foxborough
00:34:18I think the intangibles are going to be a whole lot stronger I don't want to keep using the same
00:34:25buzzwords that we've all kind of thrown out there over the last couple weeks but I just think
00:34:30you know the the biggest thing that was missing and I know we talked about this
00:34:34before last season you know it would have been a win for the Patriots last season if Drake
00:34:39made developed which he did and the team was playing hard respectable football you know
00:34:46especially late in the year and I know the the big example I kept comparing them to was
00:34:50the 23 Cardinals you know the Cardinals weren't good in 23 but they played hard they were scheme
00:34:57sounds and they at least built some momentum toward 24 now they made progress around the
00:35:03stretch something the Patriots absolutely did not do this exactly so you're gonna see just
00:35:07the intangibles you're gonna see a team that's fighting harder for each other you're not gonna
00:35:11you're not you shouldn't I don't I don't know you can't predict these things I guess but you're
00:35:16less likely to come out of a Sunday saying where is the dissension coming from this week you know
00:35:23where is why why isn't this running back starting when this running back was supposed to start like
00:35:29you're not going to have a lot of people looking over their shoulder wondering what in the world
00:35:33is going on so and I think we'll see what that leads to as a product on the field this team
00:35:39as a product on the field this team still has a lot of rebuilding to do but I think Patriots fans
00:35:44are going to at least come out of these Sundays win or lose and at least have a little more pride
00:35:49in what they saw from their team okay I'll settle for just close and like more points on the board
00:35:57than 17 that's that's that's all I'm hoping for uh all right story time Tennessee real quick what
00:36:02it was like visiting with Rable when he was head coach uh I was gonna say master of his domain that
00:36:08means something else but you know what I mean like he's in control and he knows it in a way that
00:36:12he he had similar power with the Titans that he has now here in New England in his second go-round
00:36:17yeah look he's a unique character there there truly is not another I I have not met anybody
00:36:24else like Mike Rable around the league and at this point I guess I'm going into year four I think uh
00:36:31in this in this role and I've gotten to meet you know pretty much everybody in a position of power
00:36:37and I I haven't seen anybody like Rable he's just you have to command his attention when you're
00:36:41talking to him or else you're going to lose it really quickly uh we don't have too much of a
00:36:46background even though you know I I spent so much time covering the Patriots like occasional like
00:36:52scrums or just you know saying hi because I was in proximity to Karen uh who we both know and
00:36:58love from our time with her at the Herald yeah but so like there was a very small familiarity
00:37:06that Rable and I had when I visited Nashville a couple summers ago and I remember so I'm standing
00:37:11now all these teams have different access during training camp like some you can stand basically
00:37:17right on top of the field others want you 100 yards away you know watching you know from a 737
00:37:24but with Tennessee you know I was walking around the field and they were having a live scrimmage
00:37:29and I I remember this DeAndre Hopkins took over that day it was it was actually pretty fun to
00:37:34watch but I was standing down by the end zone and I'm very aware of when you're standing next
00:37:41to a football field and these guys are practicing and the play starts coming toward the sideline
00:37:45you better get the hell out of the way very quickly because those guys you can see them
00:37:49coming closer to you but if you even blink you're going to be tearing an ACL and you don't need that
00:37:56I mean it's it's so you need to have a good amount of self-awareness so I'm not standing
00:38:01on the sideline oblivious or just like naive or like oh yeah nobody's going to run into me I'm
00:38:06invisible invincible so I'm paying attention and they're running a play at the 50 and I'm at the
00:38:14pylon so I'm 50 yards away now they completed a deep ball to Hopkins maybe 15 yards away from me
00:38:21not anywhere close to the sideline again I'm watching and then I'm sitting there and I don't
00:38:25know if it was like somebody behind me was trying to talk to me something happened that very very
00:38:30like for a moment took away my attention and they were between plays they were not running plays
00:38:36but then all of a sudden I start hearing hey get off the field get off the field get off my field
00:38:41and I'm like who is yell or like get away from my field maybe that's what it was and I'm like
00:38:47looking around and I'm like who is somebody's yelling it's I'm like oh that's Brable and then
00:38:51I very quickly realized no he's yelling at me I was too close to the field and they were about to
00:38:56run a play that was going to go toward that right pylon and he wanted me so far back so then after
00:39:02practice so I don't think too much of it I'm like yeah you know what I screwed up I was paying 99%
00:39:07of attention and I should have been at 100 and that was my bad and I deserved to kind of get
00:39:12called out for it now I was not dangerously close to the field but I appreciated the fact that Mike
00:39:16Brable didn't want a death on his hands that day so I go up after and I'm like hey what's up Mike
00:39:21like good to see you and he was like oh oh you're the guy I told to get the f off my field and I was
00:39:27like yeah yeah Mike not not not my not my best moment but you know just a guy who will he's got
00:39:35a good recall he will bust your chops at any given moment and again you you always you hear you heard
00:39:44the stories about Taylor at Luan saying you need to always be paying attention like you don't want
00:39:48to be that guy who gets called out and even though this example is is nowhere near the the
00:39:53neighborhood of of how a player would get called out in a different type of environment you kind
00:39:58of see uh what he's what he's capable of when he when he feels like getting a little fiery
00:40:04and he was fine after that point yeah absolutely yeah so that's that's the other part is and I've
00:40:09called him sarcastic and biting and that's from experiences people have told me and
00:40:13Frable has owned up to and sometimes backed off a little bit in meetings but once he gets his
00:40:18point across it moves on which frankly is a very healthy way to go about your business providing
00:40:23you have people around you understand kind of what the deal is and have thick enough skin
00:40:26so to the point of your story of guy who's obviously not hesitant to to share speak his mind
00:40:32but then after the fact even if it is sarcastic or biting or angry or whatever it is you know it's
00:40:37all good because you know everyone's moved on so why not yeah and we have we had a good conversation
00:40:42we spoke for a little bit and uh until I couldn't keep until I I got boring and and we had to just
00:40:50part ways sounds like a lot of my high school college relationships excellent thanks thanks
00:40:57all right yeah we we have uh we have a good variety of questions here it's not everyone
00:41:02who asked a question twitter or blue sky but uh we're gonna get these now after our last break
00:41:07okay so I know most of you still remember it's only been about five years the patriots playing

00:42:40game time all right leading off David takes us back to Tennessee any shot the Pats look at
00:42:46possibly acquiring Jeffrey Simmons from the Titans between Vrabel and now Terrell Williams
00:42:50hires obviously there's a connection what do you think I think it's worth the call um if I'm
00:42:56Tennessee I mean he's one of the very few foundational pieces you have so I don't know
00:43:01why they would give him up but it's still an excellent player the Patriots are in need of
00:43:07excellent players uh so it makes a whole lot of sense and if if that's somebody Vrabel wants to
00:43:13keep working with yeah absolutely make the call but again if I'm if I'm Tennessee unless you know
00:43:18unless he looks much more or much closer to the back nine than we are seeing from afar I I don't
00:43:25I don't know why you would give him up and if you're the Patriots for anything less than like
00:43:30a second round pick and I wouldn't give up what 35 or 36 to get him so Jeffrey Simmons is 27 he's
00:43:38under contract through 2027 so this is a real asset like forget that the guy is a perennial
00:43:43you know pro bowl caliber if not actual pro bowler sometimes all pro player he's in the prime of his
00:43:49career you've got him under control for the next three seasons that's a guy you should go after
00:43:53it's funny you mentioned a second round pick that's the thing that came to mind to me too that
00:43:57I would be palatable with or be palatable for me if I was the Patriots now granted this is also a
00:44:03team that cannot really afford to part with any kind of draft picks but if you were going to
00:44:07as a rebuilding team blue chip player who immediately plugs a hole in and is familiar
00:44:12with the system and you're familiar with so there's really no risk of this kind of adjustment
00:44:16period Jeffrey Simmons is it like that that's a guy when you look at needs and we're going to
00:44:21talk a lot about the pass rush I wrote about this the other day it's not just on the edge like
00:44:25Devon Gottschall was your only consistent defensive tackle and you cross your fingers and toes and
00:44:29everything else at Christian Barmore will obviously be okay with the blood clots that's the starting
00:44:33point his health if he's not you need as much help as anyone in the league at defensive tackle
00:44:39because even when Gottschall was here it's pretty inconsistent at the one thing he's good at which
00:44:43is stopping the run so Jeffrey Simmons is three downs impact drawing double teams you don't even
00:44:49need to take my word for it you can just think back to that game the Patriots played in Tennessee
00:44:53when he had his way with the Patriots offensive line granted not a high bar and it's just a guy
00:44:59every single box you can want prime his career under contract familiar blue chip that's defensive
00:45:06tackle is as big of any other need he would fill all that and help out a lot so yeah I hope they
00:45:09do make the call but I would also suspect they don't the Titans are not going to only hear from
00:45:14the Patriots about it right and my concern would be like let's say you know if your dream scenario
00:45:20you get Abdul Carter at four and you're going to add some pieces in free agency on the offensive
00:45:27line but like if you get Carter at four you use your second pick on another defensive lineman
00:45:33in a Simmons straight hypothetically you know where's the future of the offensive line coming
00:45:39from and I'm not saying like last year's draft I think people are overreacting to the fact that
00:45:46they didn't get an offensive lineman early enough because they're quite frankly weren't any like you
00:45:51just be just because you drafted an offensive lineman instead of Jalen Polk doesn't mean that
00:45:56offensive lineman was going to be good because the evidence has shown us that they really weren't
00:46:00uh you know there's a couple diamonds in the rough later in the draft but like
00:46:04you know you'll even looking at this draft like I don't think there's a top five offensive lineman
00:46:09in this class uh not by merit now there might be where a point where the need exceeds the talent
00:46:15that's available but it's it's just a tough run on offensive linemen so I don't know like yeah
00:46:21you can solve some things in free agency at some point you need to start adding some blue chip
00:46:25prospects so it's like I think you got to do everything possible to get Hunter or Carter
00:46:31at four assuming there's two quarterbacks who are going before you and then with the second pick
00:46:37like I just I I think that would be not a gross mismanagement of assets but it certainly wouldn't
00:46:46be an ideal uh management of assets for a second round pick yeah just because again now I have not
00:46:53look I've I've tried to study or get an understanding of how the top 10 to maybe 12
00:47:00picks of the draft will go just in terms of what these offensive linemen are looking like
00:47:04I don't have a great you know I'm not Dane Brugler right now I don't know who's in the
00:47:08offensive line category in the 30s like and how good of a prospect you're going to get you know
00:47:13if I if I find out like right after this that like you're not getting a good offensive lineman
00:47:18in the 30s then sure you know what pony up that that 36th pick or wherever they are
00:47:23to try to get Simmons from from Tennessee but I just think like ignoring that position high
00:47:29in the draft for a second year in a row or preemptively doing it by making an earlier
00:47:33trade before the drafts uh it has a chance to unfold I would be skeptical yeah a couple a
00:47:39couple of things on this um number one because these are players that I argued for at the time
00:47:45like Brandon Coleman who went to Washington and had been at TCU and played a bunch of different
00:47:50positions and fit all the physical prototypes that the Packers and Elliott Wolfe typically
00:47:54use this benchmark for their offensive linemen was there a couple picks ahead of Kate Wallace
00:47:59Roger Rosengarten goes with Ravens and is starting for them right tackle and only really
00:48:02played right tackle um guys that were available they could have moved up to go get you don't
00:48:06have to sit and pick you can jump ahead for certain guys there's risk baked into that
00:48:11but those are players I thought were better than Kate Wallace I don't know if the Patriots did
00:48:14but to me would have made better picks I think there were offensive linemen they could have
00:48:17gotten up and gotten granted that's in the past and there's so much for the draft so I
00:48:23I want to just stress it's January 23rd okay but when you talk about like you got to get Carter
00:48:30and Travis Hunter that makes a lot of sense to me I think Abdul Carter just as someone
00:48:34who's watched him more than I think most people have in the region would be a really really good
00:48:38pick Will Campbell at LSU short arms this and that lots to learn I would entertain if you do
00:48:45let's say theoretically deal this second round pick for Jeffrey Simmons which to me I'm going
00:48:49to say right now stamp of approval done deal at that point I'm more incentivized to trade back
00:48:55possibly and who knows what the offers are who knows who the players are going to be that are
00:48:58available if I can go back four or five maybe six spots at most and Campbell still around there or
00:49:05Calvin Banks Jr. I know people are lower on from Texas as your potential left tackle in the process
00:49:10of moving back you would recoup at least a mid-round pick if not a second round pick and
00:49:15then still be able to address that offensive line need does that assuage any of your concerns
00:49:19there as I throw this out there where we just we just perfected the Patriots offensive defensive
00:49:24line we just fixed it right there Jeffrey Simmons trade trade back from four and restock your your
00:49:28asset shelf look I I think if you if you're hell-bent on now if you pass on Carter you're
00:49:37you're going to deserve all the second guessing that you're like if he turns into Micah Parsons
00:49:42it's it's probably not going to look good for a while for you no so you have to be cognizant of
00:49:47that however if you sit there and you're Elliott Wolfe and Ryan Cowden and Mike Vrabel and you're
00:49:54trying to figure out how the draft board is going to fall and you really really really want Will
00:50:01Campbell then trading back to let's say the 8 to 12 area and still getting him I would say that's
00:50:07that's a win and then you're going to pick up I would guess at least a three in order to do that
00:50:16but again like you are still still really hoping the two quarterbacks go in the top three
00:50:24because that is going to incentivize somebody to trade up for either Hunter or Carter because
00:50:30those guys I think do have a lot of trade up stock now if one of those quarterbacks let's
00:50:37say Shador Sanders you know Cam Ward right now is is the most likely number one pick
00:50:42Shador Sanders has a chance to work his way into that conversation if he crushes it the next couple
00:50:49months at the bowl games and the pro day and the meetings and the combine you know he needs to
00:50:55interview well and if he does he's going to get in that mix if he does not you're going to see
00:51:00Shador Sanders potentially take a pretty big tumble and that's going to throw off a team that
00:51:05is picking in the top four because now all of a sudden you don't the top three is now looking like
00:51:11Cam Ward um Travis Hunter Abdul Carter in whatever order and if you don't have a team that's
00:51:17comfortable enough to trade up for Sanders then all of a sudden the fourth pick is not as desirable
00:51:23okay ready for another trade let's go Garrett Wilson this is from Jason is there any world
00:51:28where the Patriots could trade for Garrett Wilson Jets would seem to be a perfect trade partner if
00:51:33you know they weren't division rivals
00:51:37I think I I cannot um you know like it's it's not it's not gonna happen like there's just
00:51:47come on I get it I get it I love the creativity I appreciate the question I I like putting
00:51:56yourself out there and kind of really swinging for it I I love I love the question and I'm happy
00:52:01it was asked I cannot disagree with the premise anymore because the Jets can't risk Garrett Wilson
00:52:11playing well for the Patriots Garrett Wilson still has more than enough talent to think that he's
00:52:17going to be successful somewhere else let it happen in the NFC if you're the Jets if the
00:52:23Patriots are willing to spend a full round higher than anybody else and probably add let's say a
00:52:29fourth rounder to it you know what maybe maybe you're more comfortable taking that risk I just
00:52:35the pettiness between the organizations is the is the reason why it's not going to happen
00:52:40and you would think oh well the Jets has got a new head coach they'll have a new GM soon
00:52:44Patriots got a new coach like all this is ancient history yeah that's now shared history between
00:52:49Aaron Glenn playing for the Jets and Mike Bray will playing for the Patriots like that F you
00:52:54that salt tax is absolutely back baby and I'm so here for it I'm with you I don't think this will
00:52:59happen if the Patriots do or did trade for Garrett Wilson there would be that F you tax of like you
00:53:03got to give us a lot more because you're the Patriots and I welcome it so much I hope Aaron
00:53:07Glenn uh granted the Patriots are not the bar to shoot for anymore in the AFC East but I just need
00:53:12a little bit of salt I need a little bit of ceasing when my patch Jets rivalry this would
00:53:15certainly add to it but I think for that reason it is prohibitive on the front end not to mention
00:53:20if I'm the Jets like okay Garrett Wilson's upset here whatever you want you can stay Aaron gone
00:53:27Devonta Adams gone with him we're going to reboot you do that around young players young proven
00:53:32players he's in that category you are now our focus and our priority not the quarterback who's
00:53:37off doing god knows what um so I'm I'm with you and and if you wanted to get ahead of the
00:53:42you know next contract because I'll have to pick up the fifth year option here soon and then you're
00:53:45only uh under contract for two seasons and if he says I'm not going to extend yada yada okay maybe
00:53:50you do get ahead of it but when they're not there yet if they do get there plenty of other teams
00:53:54will be calling Mike Vrabel didn't come here to make any friends he's he came here to set a
00:53:59different type of tone he wants everybody to to to show up and have the same tone you know he doesn't
00:54:07want to show up and be like you know what it's a new day let's be friends with the Jets let's uh
00:54:13let's see how this works like if you if you work any farther away from Gillette Stadium than like
00:54:19Rodman Ford Mike Vrabel probably doesn't want to talk to you so it's the whole Jets that's a
00:54:26bummer for me there's not going to be any there's not like there's no kumbaya at Rodman Ice Arena
00:54:32a little farther away so let's the Jets that's not he's not he's not doing that all right speaking
00:54:38of receivers and you know this from your time on the beat about the McDaniels offense typically
00:54:42not being rookie receiver friendly and Brady played a role in that yada yada but here's a
00:54:46question from Mark quote does the McDaniels hire effectively reset the receiver room so guys like
00:54:51Jalen Polk and Javon Baker are back at square one relearning a more complicated system those guys
00:54:56desperately need their quote year two bump and now it feels like they're screwed and we need to rely
00:55:02upon veteran free agent targets do you buy that I mean did they learn their year one system can
00:55:08we call it year two uh one of them did yeah uh look Baker Baker's playing for his job there's
00:55:17your fourth round pick your scholarship is over in year two and it's doubly bad when you've got
00:55:25a new regime Polk is pretty damn close to the same category and it's because of the regime you got a
00:55:32new regime you know unless all of a sudden we find out that Elliot Wolfe is in total control of the
00:55:37roster which you know I don't expect to happen Mike Vrabel is going to sit here and say hey
00:55:41Jalen you better make the team because I'm carrying the five best and there is yeah it's going to
00:55:47sting if you give up what was it the 30 the guy was the 35th pick in the draft 34th pick in the
00:55:52draft wherever he was last year yeah um people forget like that's not great asset management
00:55:57either but when you've got a new regime everything's I think unless you were a first round pick a year
00:56:02earlier you've got to earn your spot so this entire receiver group could could turn over
00:56:10yeah I am with you on Baker I think the conversation starts and stops there
00:56:14you're a fourth round pick you had one catch you had as many catches as the starting left tackle
00:56:19did all of last season that's that's where you're at so system or not that's not on anyone else but
00:56:25Javon Baker to figure might be the the Lions offensive line might have had more catches
00:56:30than Baker they did and Jalen Polk had two catches I believe after Halloween so I don't
00:56:37put this and granted the point being that there's a steeper climb now uphill uh might be fair or not
00:56:43but it's more about the climber than the climb for both of those guys and I think Jalen Polk
00:56:48was dealing with um bouts of being too hard on himself can completely relate to that and
00:56:54understand how it compounds and makes you worse at your job but that's separate from the system
00:57:00so whatever the system is or isn't and there is some reason to be encouraged you know Burt Breer
00:57:04from SI is saying that McDaniels went around visited a bunch of colleges learned how to
00:57:08simplify a system just kind of streamline things maybe that's good news I don't think they're just
00:57:12going to suddenly punt and free agency and just be like we need to sign a bunch of guys because
00:57:15you can't trust them you would sign them because receiver as it has been for years is still a need
00:57:21and that's not Josh McDaniel's fault it's the guys who are in that room all right two more
00:57:25Graham uh who are the players that will benefit most from the new coordinator hires
00:57:31I can start here because I think you're going to need a second yeah okay uh Keanu White number
00:57:38one with a bullet in my mind is a guy who was asked to be coached hard uh thrived as he put it
00:57:44under Belichick and you could look at the stats I'm like yeah wasn't that good his rookie year
00:57:47was better than people see in the traditional box score in the same way that his second season
00:57:52was worse than when you look at oh team high five sacks okay Keanu White was not that consistent
00:57:58that uh good of a performer in his second year I do think being under a defensive coordinator who
00:58:04was a defensive line coach one of the best in the league will help him immediately when it
00:58:08comes to McDaniels I do think the veteran receivers in that room Kendrick Bourne already
00:58:13mentioned 800 receiving yards he's going to come up here in a second will benefit from Josh
00:58:17McDaniels coming back and we know he's very excited because he tweets almost immediately
00:58:21he's back and so there you go I don't have to answer anymore I think certain players like
00:58:27Hunter Henry have thrived in any kind of system I think Drake May will benefit greatly again having
00:58:31all the answers to the test as it were within the system um beyond that you know we'll see
00:58:37on defense but I think the defensive line is an easy answer and specifically Keanu White
00:58:41and certainly Kendrick Bourne on offense that I think will get this kind of bump if not boost
00:58:45um you know which is not too hard to figure out but I think off the top of my head and
00:58:49understanding what we know and what we've seen going back to when McDaniels was here last those
00:58:53are the two obvious candidates yeah I mean I think T Higgins is really going to benefit from McDaniels
00:59:00uh yeah look I think um you look at smart players so Kendrick Bourne and Hunter Henry
00:59:10you look at guys who you can rely on to be productive so those are those two and I mean
00:59:17Ramondre Stevenson has to bounce back right I think maybe uh and then yeah I was going to say
00:59:23the D line too so I'm just stealing all your stuff I what I want to do is hijack the show
00:59:27and ask what in the world happened to Keanu on Keanu White the last couple weeks of the season
00:59:34he I think had it with the coaching staff made that clear again talking to our uh godmother
00:59:41professionally Karen Greene um who just opened up he's like I don't know about my future
00:59:46there have to be big changes and Gerard Mayo was pretty confident that he would walk that back and
00:59:51he can't why he didn't so I think the relationship right there is out in the open for everyone to
00:59:54study and when you don't believe in your boss you don't believe you're getting better and he took
00:59:57accountability he was like I need to play better I don't know why I feel so disconnected but it's
01:00:02on me and he criticized specifically his own run defense it's just a guy that versatility I think
01:00:10became a curse for him where you're playing for a team that has so many different holes
01:00:14and when you're not allowed to kind of stick in one position and then when you haven't earned
01:00:18the trust just to be able to take care of being on the edge or an interior rusher like there's
01:00:23just too many moving parts and not enough answers and you get caught in the middle and that's what
01:00:28happened with him in addition to um just some bad plays in his part some effort related other
01:00:33technique and you're just going this is day one stuff man you blew it but it's just kind of a
01:00:37melting pot of miscues is what I would say gotcha all right uh I lied when I said two more but this
01:00:43is number one of now finally two more bj.com I do not advise anyone to go visit this website
01:00:50but this is what the handle was and this is the question that was asked from bj.com Kendrick
01:00:56Bourne seems really happy that McDaniels is back yes established and he had a career year
01:01:00as offensive coordinator in 2020 uh when McDaniels was the offensive coordinator in 2021 but is there
01:01:06a chance Bourne doesn't even make the team as the team tries to find better receiver talent my answer
01:01:12is no uh I forgot to look this up how's the contract like how much would they be very team
01:01:18friendly he's got two years left they could cut him this summer without much penalty um my answer
01:01:24in addition to it being a friendly contract and Kendrick being somewhere between a three and four
01:01:29option at this point in his career is that last year he's coming out the ACL and he did not
01:01:33participate at all in training camp or the preseason and you always hear from guys who
01:01:37tear their ACLs I didn't feel like myself until year two post-recovery so that's what is upcoming
01:01:44in addition to the fact that like okay you're he's not gonna make the team because you brought in
01:01:49T Higgins and Chris Godwin and McMillan the kid from Arizona and yada yada like it would take
01:01:55just unprecedented amount of movement in the receiver room a la 2007 with Randy Moss and
01:02:00Dante Stallworth and even Jabbar Gaffney got to hang around that year and Wes Walker obviously
01:02:03um for him to be gone I just don't think that's gonna happen yeah I think it's unlikely but I
01:02:08wouldn't completely dismiss it just because like you said the possibility does exist where they
01:02:13get the high-priced guy in T Higgins or and then the second tier guy like a DeAndre Hopkins or like
01:02:19you said maybe a Chris Godwin although I'd be surprised if he left Tampa and then all of a
01:02:25sudden let's say you draft a couple guys and or let's say let's say Polk and Booty play really
01:02:32well in training camp and now all of a sudden you're sitting there and saying well Kendrick
01:02:36Bourne doesn't cover punts he's fourth or fifth on the depth chart you know what's truly gonna be
01:02:42his role like I don't think that's overly likely but I I wouldn't dismiss that possibility because
01:02:47I don't think it's too far-fetched fair enough all right this one uh comes from Andrew on the
01:02:52podcast hey Jeff pal any off-season predictions to the Patriots uh moving forward you go draft
01:02:58free agency we'll get you out on just one one prediction I think this will happen or has a
01:03:01likelihood to happen you mentioned T Higgins a couple of times what do you got
01:03:08yeah I'm going Abdul Carter at four I think that's I think that's the play and I think
01:03:14that's going to be a Vrabel type of guy and I mean I I felt I don't I'm not ready to go all the way
01:03:21onto this but I'm gonna I'm gonna let I'm gonna let some words filter out of the like I remember
01:03:27looking at Micah Parsons before his draft and saying that is a guy who if it all really comes
01:03:32together you can see before he's even taken us before he even has a hat to wear from an NFL team
01:03:39this is a guy with hall of fame potential uh I think Abdul Carter is close to that and I want
01:03:48to learn more I still have a lot of people to talk to about him I want to make sure I understand
01:03:53uh the off-field stuff as well as as we all kind of know what he is on the field at this point
01:03:59but man if you get like I know it's it it sucks the the patron that for the Patriots to lose that
