00:00Tis the season of sequels, remakes, ballooning budgets, and side characters.
00:052025 will give us plenty of exciting movies, but these ones probably aren't destined for
00:10box office glory.
00:11A Minecraft movie is the latest in a long line of video game movie adaptations.
00:16Directed by Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess, this one will see a group of normal
00:20people transported into the blocky world of Minecraft, joining up with a guy named Steve,
00:25and learning to survive.
00:26Alright, there's a chance that this film could do well.
00:29It's based on a property that has proven incredibly popular with kids and is well-known
00:34all around the world, yet the odds seem stacked against it.
00:37Video game adaptations aren't exactly a safe bet.
00:40For example, Borderlands has proved that star-studded, big-budget game adaptations can still bomb
00:45spectacularly at the box office.
00:47A Minecraft movie doesn't exactly have a strong narrative to focus on, either, as the original
00:51game is designed for exploration rather than a story-led experience.
00:56Marvel Studios had several movies and television shows coming out in 2025, including Captain
01:01America Brave New World and The Fantastic Four First Steps.
01:05But despite the rocky history of the Fantastic Four franchise in Hollywood, it's Thunderbolts
01:10that really has us worried.
01:11In a nutshell, it lacks the big-name stars of the other 2025 MCU movies and is centered
01:19largely on lesser-known characters.
01:21Fans probably want to see what the next chapter holds for Captain America, and there's been
01:25a lot of anticipation for Marvel characters migrating over from Fox.
01:29So it's likely that if viewers are going to get fatigued and avoid any MCU entry next
01:33year, it's gonna be Thunderbolts.
01:36Mission Impossible not only firmly established Tom Cruise as an action star but became a
01:40highly successful franchise that has lasted almost 30 years.
01:44Almost every entry has been a commercial success, but the magic has waned with the most recent
01:48installment.
01:49Don't get us wrong, plenty of people saw Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1.
01:54It grossed around $570 million against a budget of over $290 million.
02:01Factor in all the boring marketing costs, distribution, and so on, and those aren't
02:05exactly great numbers, and Paramount Pictures has shown a few signs that it's a little spooked.
02:10The 2025 sequel has dropped the Part 2 moniker and is now called Mission Impossible The Final
02:15Reckoning.
02:16With a ballooning budget that could exceed $400 million, Mission Impossible The Final
02:21Reckoning would have to significantly outperform its predecessor and likely hit the $1 billion
02:26mark to be a financial hit.
02:28There's every chance that the apparent decline in interest for the franchise could continue
02:32with what is being billed as the final outing for Ethan Hunt.
02:35Fingers crossed that Tom Cruise can do the impossible and complete the only mission that
02:39matters, making the studios a buttload of money.
02:42I need you to trust me one last time."
02:46Dirty Dancing 2 is technically the third entry in the series.
02:49After the 2004 prequel Dirty Dancing Havana Nights, the film has been in development for
02:54more than four years and faced numerous delays.
02:57With a scheduled summer 2025 release window, we still know almost nothing about Dirty Dancing
03:032 and exactly who will be a part of the cast, outside of the fact that original star Jennifer
03:08Gray will return.
03:09That likely will not be enough to attract viewers, especially considering that Patrick
03:13Swayze, who died in 2009, will not be in the film.
03:17Nobody puts baby in a corner."
03:18Our prediction?
03:19Dirty Dancing 2 comes and goes without any fanfare.
03:23Several John Wick spinoffs have been in development in recent years, and the first theatrical project
03:27is from the world of John Wick, Ballerina.
03:29Set between the third and fourth entries in the series, the film stars Ana de Armas as
03:34a ballerina turned assassin.
03:36What isn't clear, though, is whether there is any real interest in a John Wick movie
03:39without Reeves taking up the starring role.
03:41How do I start doing what you do?
03:44Looks like you already have.
03:46This new film has also faced a troubled production.
03:49Delayed from June 2024, reports suggest it has been almost entirely re-shot, a move that
03:55almost never says good things for the project as a whole.
03:58Disney's quest to recreate all of its animated classics in glorious, still mostly animated
04:03live-action continues in 2025 with Snow White, helmed by the amazing Spider-Man director
04:09Mark Webb with a script from vinyl writer Erin Kessler-Dawilson and Barbie filmmaker
04:14Greta Gerwig, who said herself that she only worked on the script for a few weeks and has
04:18some good talent behind the scenes.
04:20But will that make any difference?
04:22Disney's live-action remakes have been a mixed bag both in terms of box office performance
04:26and critical reception.
04:27Honestly, it's a toss-up whether Snow White will find an audience, especially given that
04:32the original came out so long ago.
04:34The film has also been embroiled in several controversies leading to unwanted negative
04:38attention.
04:39There's been some backlash to rumored plots and character changes, as well as a reaction
04:43to comments by Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, about Disney making updates to the
04:48story.
04:49That could all mean nothing, of course, but unfortunately, we're guessing that Snow White
04:53will be a poisoned apple for box office receipts.
04:56There's an argument to be made that there hasn't been a proper hit in terms of original
05:00animated movies since 2017's Coco.
05:03Various Disney and Pixar releases that have been brand new stories have failed to make
05:07any impact, with the list of failures including Soul and Wish.
05:11Based on that metric, there aren't a lot of reasons to be optimistic that 2025's Elio
05:16will be anything other than a bomb for Pixar.
05:18We hope that's not the case.
05:20On paper, an original concept from a studio that once excelled at those is an exciting
05:25prospect.
05:26Realistically, though, Elio will probably flop.
05:28Not helping the cause is the fact that Elio is also a science fiction movie, as sci-fi
05:32animated releases have generally disappointed at the box office or been outright flops,
05:37no matter how good they were.
05:39Even with recent surprises like The Wild Robot, the future doesn't look particularly
05:44bright for this Pixar movie.
05:46Fresh off his portrayal of rancher John Dutton in the neo-Western TV series Yellowstone,
05:50Kevin Costner decided to create his own new film franchise in the form of Horizon, An
05:55American Saga.
05:56Although it is set in the Civil War period, way before Yellowstone, the first film explores
06:01similar themes as a more classical American Western.
06:04"...and from here, something you want to say?"
06:07The original plan was for Horizon, An American Saga Chapter 2 to arrive in theaters less
06:11than two months after its predecessor, in August 2024.
06:15However, critics didn't hold back with their disdain for Chapter 1, which also grossed
06:19under $40 million.
06:21It was a dismal performance that led New Line Cinema to push the sequel back.
06:25It may now arrive sometime in 2025, but even this delay is unlikely to make it a box office
06:31success, as interest from the first film just isn't there.
06:35After winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020 for Parasite, director and writer
06:40Bong Joon-ho was always likely to be in demand by major Hollywood studios.
06:44Warner Bros. eventually snagged the chance to release his next project, Mickey 17, which
06:49is set for release in March 2025.
06:52Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an expendable worker who's regenerated
06:57into a new body every time he dies.
06:59The jury is out on whether Mickey 17 will have anything like the same sort of success
07:03as Bong's previous work.
07:05For one, it has a budget that is almost 14 times the amount it cost to make Parasite,
07:09a sum of money that makes the chances of the film being a financial hit much harder.
07:14It is also a very different kind of movie, and not something that fans of the filmmaker
07:17might be expecting.
07:18Then again, if you are a fan of the filmmaker, then not expecting something is exactly what
07:23you'd expect.
07:24So again, the jury's out on this one.
07:27The Frankenstein franchise hasn't exactly been relevant for several decades, but that
07:31hasn't stopped Maggie Gyllenhaal from writing and directing The Bride, an adaptation of
07:35the 1935 film Pride of Frankenstein.
07:37Uniquely, The Bride is a musical that will feature large dance numbers that are intended
07:41to appeal to adults and younger audiences alike.
07:44The film is also set to face some tough competition in the horror genre.
07:48It will be released at around the same time as the next entries in both The Conjuring
07:52and Saw franchises, meaning audiences will have plenty of options.
07:56The biggest problem, though, is simply that a horror musical based on a very old black
08:00and white movie is only ever likely to have niche appeal.
08:03If all goes according to plan, 2025 will be the year that the I Know What You Did Last
08:07Summer franchise returns with a fourth untitled entry in the series.
08:11Ignoring the direct-to-video film I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, it acts as
08:15a sequel to 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
08:19That may not be a good sign, even though reboots and legacy sequels to old horror franchises
08:24are definitely in vogue right now.
08:26The film is also coming out in a packed summer schedule that will give it a lot of competition.
08:30Based on current release dates, it will be sandwiched between Superman and The Fantastic
08:34Four first steps.
08:35All of that makes it much more difficult for I Know What You Did Last Summer to be anything
08:39other than a flop.
08:40"...we need to build our car for combat."
08:42"...how am I supposed to make that safe?"
08:46"...who said anything about safe?"
08:48Scheduled for a June 2025 release, F1 is a sports drama that centers around Brad Pitt's
08:54a former Formula One driver who mentors Damson Idris' Joshua Pierce as he starts his racing
09:00career.
09:01There's a lot working against F1.
09:03Racing films like 2019's Ford v. Ferrari and 2023's Ferrari tend not to be big hits, and
09:09Formula One still only has niche appeal in the U.S.
09:12The 2013 film Rush grossed less than $100 million, and the highly-praised documentary
09:17Senna earned just a little over $10 million.
09:20A reported budget of $300 million won't do the film any favors when it comes to making
09:25money, either, as it means it will have to make close to $1 billion to be a commercial
09:30hit.
09:31Set for release on October 3, 2025, Michael is a musical biopic that stars Jafar Jackson
09:36as his late uncle, Michael Jackson.
09:38The film follows the King of Pop's life from the early days of the Jackson 5 up to his
09:42death in 2009.
09:44Training Day director Antoine Fuqua is helming the production, based on a script by John
09:48Logan of Skyfall fame.
09:50A budget of more than $155 million, however, will make it difficult for Michael to earn
09:55a profit.
09:56Cracking the musical biography genre is not easy.
09:58Bohemian Rhapsody was a runaway success, but this involved a much-loved band that is famous
10:03in practically every part of the world, and had a brilliant performance from actor Rami
10:07Malek.
10:08While Michael Jackson ultimately sold more records than Queen, the biopic could be affected
10:13by allegations made against the King of Pop.
10:16The filmmakers have contended that Michael would be an unbiased account of his life,
10:20but Leaving Neverland director Dan Reed felt like they had downplayed the allegations from
10:24his latter days after seeing a draft of the script.
10:27Much of Jackson's life has also been told before, so it's unclear if there is any demand
10:31for a project like this.
