Developing colour and material schemes is an independent discipline within the MINI Design Studio. The interplay of newly developed patterns, colours, small design details and the use of innovative materials creates a particularly harmonious, homey ambience in the new MINI model interiors. Drawing inspiration from fashion, art, architecture and modern furniture design, completely new design worlds, still maintaining links to the rich tradition of iconic MINI design, emerge.

A key and consistent feature of the colour and material design for the new MINI model family is their particular attention to detail. It can be seen and sensed in every equipment variant. The colour scheme, choice of materials, visual and tactile elements combine to create an immersive and typical MINI overall experience.

One particular highlight is the innovative 2D weaving process used in the production of interior surfaces made from recycled polyester. The dashboards and door panels designed in this way create a sense of warmth and cosiness. The weaving process offers new design possibilities in terms of colouring and structure. It enables a dual-colour design with a particularly striking sense of depth. This comes about when the lower textile layer’s colour subtly shines through the upper one. This technique, inspired by sneaker design and meticulously refined, gives the surfaces a visual complexity, bringing a high-quality and unique appearance to the interior.

00:00Wherever we go, we are always surrounded by color and surface, and everything is designed.
00:11You will maybe not notice it at the first sight, but often there is an inner feel of
00:16what is good and bad design.
00:19At MINI, we have a strong heritage, and so is the iconic design.
00:40Color is meaning a lot for me.
00:42It's mainly everything.
00:44We are surrounded by colors every day, every minute, everywhere.
00:49Color and trim is a discipline within the MINI design studio.
00:56I see something and I'm already triggered by a sentence, by an image, and immediately
01:02there is something going on.
01:03I'm a really fast person in putting and thinking color concepts.
01:08People at MINI are constantly developing ideas of thinking cars in new ways.
01:12Therefore, we need to experiment with new materials and technologies.
01:17And rather to look only backwards for inspiration, MINI looks all around, seeking references
01:22in art, fashion, and even home living to keep pace with the world.
01:27Brains are very small structures which you can find on nearly every plastic part in the
01:33visible or touchable area of our MINI cars.
01:38We are always starting with big research.
01:41Therefore, we try to find inspiration and we can find it really everywhere in nature,
01:47like stones, water, wood.
01:49I have had some pictures which are coming from a satellite where you have a top view
01:53on the earth.
01:54You can see that it feels very small, but it appears like a structure.
01:59And we are searching for strong mood pictures, and then we try to cluster that in different
02:05main topics, and there we start to develop different directions for draining structures.
02:14We used knit for the very first time.
02:17It's also something new.
02:19And now we have a lot of textiles in it.
02:21It makes it really warm and cozy.
02:24I really love details.
02:26I love to design every single loop, every single thread, the stitchings on seats.
02:31And I think the customers can see it.
02:34And they want to search for it.
02:36Maybe you have a surface, it looks blue, but if you go closer, there are three different
02:40colors in it.
02:42Fashion is always a big inspiration.
02:45When we saw the first knitted sneaker, it was really inspiring for us.
02:50So actually, the new knitted material is a perfect canvas.
02:54We wanted to transfer the new technology to automotive.
02:59Very important for us is to match very well with the other materials we are using in the
03:04car interior.
03:05For example, now the knit material, the knit itself has a very strong direction.
03:11We need to find a grain which fits without any direction, that it's possible to implement
03:16it in all the tools we have.
03:18We want it to be on the edge, but keeping the heritage.
03:24And we have a big root in heritage and green.
03:27We have it in the interior, in the dashboard and in the seats.
03:30The petrol is supporting some hard rubber wrap.
03:34The rubber wrap has different phases.
03:37It's a wrap, but it's also a warmer wrap.
03:41The light room is very important to have a look, first of all, on the color of the parts.
03:46So we have a lot of different materials.
03:50We have two non-light situations we are using.
03:53And we call it friendly, the light of the horror.
03:56So it really shows every mistake.
03:59We can see everything, that we have really perfect parts in the end.
04:03In general, we test all materials.
04:06We test it under extreme conditions like heat, lightfastness or liquids.
04:13For the seats, there is a special robot which does live durability tests.
04:19Vibrant color palettes, patterns and cutting-edge textiles form the character of each new MINI.
04:25It's a team's work to create the innovative, but also homely atmosphere,
04:29before it all comes together in a perfect fusion.
04:32People buy the design, they like it, they drive it.
04:35It's such an amazing feeling.
04:37MINI!
