00:02 Hi, I'm Pedro Freire, writer and director
00:07 of Malu, that will be premiering at the Sundance Film
00:10 Festival in 2024.
00:12 So I come from a family of actors,
00:15 and I first decided to become a filmmaker when I watched
00:18 Faces by John Cassavetes when I was 16 years old.
00:22 At that point, I decided that I really wanted
00:24 to direct and write for actors.
00:27 So then I went to study at the legendary Cuban Film School,
00:31 where among many things, we learn how
00:33 to shoot in a very low budget.
00:36 And that came in handy later when
00:38 I went on to write and direct eight short films and some TV
00:42 series.
00:42 Malu is a family drama about a 50-year-old unemployed actress
00:46 who is forced to live with her conservative mother
00:50 while trying to save her disastrous relationship
00:53 with her own daughter.
00:54 It's a film about a woman who is struggling
00:57 to achieve her dreams despite all the obstacles.
01:01 It is a very personal film to me.
01:03 I spent many years writing and rewriting the script,
01:06 but the support I got from the producers, who
01:08 believed in the film from the very start, made me persevere.
01:12 Later, the amazing and talented work
01:15 by the cast and crew, notably Yara de Novais,
01:17 who plays Malu, moved me very much.
01:20 American independent cinema is the main reference to me
01:23 as a filmmaker because of the attention it gives
01:26 to the script and the actors.
01:28 So when I learned that my first feature film was
01:31 in competition at a Sundance Film Festival,
01:34 I literally cried.
01:35 It brought me to tears.
01:37 So it's a dream that comes true.
01:40 I can't wait to share the film with you,
01:42 and I hope you enjoy it.
