Despite the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson and senior bowler Trent Boult, Tim Southee is confident that New Zealand will be able to put on a good show in the T20 series against Sri Lanka. Southee will lead the Black Caps in the three-match series against the Lankans, which begins on September 1 in Pallekele following the conclusion of the Test series. The 14-member squad consists of three spinners Mitchell Santner, Todd Astle and Ish Sodhi. Wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert, who suffered a finger injury earlier this year, returns to the side. 00:00 Yeah it is, any time you represent your country is a special time and any time you get to
00:06 I guess captain the side is even more special.
00:08 So just stepping in for Kane while he's a well earned break, it's a freshen up before
00:14 the home summer and it's an exciting time, there's a few new faces and some guys that
00:20 impressed at the back end of our home summer last year in the T20 format.
00:23 So one day I take a bit of a back seat and the T20s come into play now with the World
00:30 Cup at the end of next year.
00:31 When you look at the squad that you've got, plenty of firepower in it right through the
00:35 line up.
00:36 Yeah there is, there's some exciting guys that had a little taste of international cricket
00:41 and some other guys that have been around for a while so it's a nice mix of experienced
00:44 guys and some fresh talent that are stamping their mark on the international game.
00:50 So yeah it's exciting, I think T20, any time T20 cricket is played it's exciting so yeah
00:56 I'm just looking forward to cracking into some T20 cricket.
00:59 Just quickly on yourself as captain, you enjoy being out there as a captain in T20, it's
01:02 obviously fast paced, high risk high reward sort of stuff.
01:06 Yeah it gets you thinking pretty quickly as well and you sort of go on your gut feel a
01:12 lot of the time and I've done it a couple of times so it's still reasonably new to me
01:16 but it's something I'm looking forward to.
01:18 What about the challenge over here, Sri Lanka in these conditions, what are you expecting,
01:22 what do you know about playing them in short form over here?
01:24 Yeah it's always tough, any side you take on away from home is always tough, that home
01:30 advantage that they hold so yeah there's a few guys that have played here before so I
01:34 guess relying on that experience from previous tours and also I guess the young exciting
01:40 talent that's also in the side as well and a chance for them to test themselves in foreign
01:45 conditions.
01:46 Tim give us a sense of the vibe, teams relocated from Gaul to Colombo today?
01:51 Yeah it's a troubled day today, I think there's a sense of I guess disappointment, we played
01:56 some good cricket throughout the five days but I think Sri Lanka were the better side
02:01 especially in the back end of the test match.
02:03 We showed glimpses throughout and the guys have learned a lot from playing in these conditions
02:09 and hopefully we can put the hard work in over the next few days and turn out a good
02:13 performance over the next test match.
02:15 Yeah the guys as I say would have learned from that, I had out in these conditions and
02:20 a couple of days training to I guess improve our skills in these conditions and put a few
02:27 things that didn't quite go to plan right for the next test match.
02:31 Can you give us an idea of what it's like as a fast bowler flying over here, obviously
02:35 it's hot, you don't get a lot of assistance, what's the sort of mindset that likes you
02:39 yourselves when you keep charging in?
02:41 Yeah it's a tough one because you know you're going to get a short spell so it's a fine
02:45 line of not trying too much but also trying to keep it tight but still trying to take
02:51 a wicket and try and do that supporting role for the spinners who are more of an attacking
02:59 option in these conditions.
03:00 And just quickly on your batting mate, some crucial runs there in partnerships which was
03:05 kind of a theme of both side batting in partnerships, how important is it for the likes of yourself
03:09 and the tail to try and contribute?
03:11 Yeah I think the tail did a great job to get us quite a competitive score in that third
03:18 inning so yeah it's something that we pride ourselves on and you look at the good sides
03:23 around the world, their tail can contribute runs, especially when there's a batsman like
03:27 BJ who does bat so well with the tail, it's about hanging in and trying to support the
03:33 job that he's doing so yeah I think it's important, not only in these conditions but any conditions
03:38 you play if your tail can leak out as many runs as possible then it makes it tough for
03:42 the opposition.
03:43 Yeah.
03:43 Thanks.
