00:39This is the story of 26 men enforcing law within the Territory.
00:46Praise be the glory of 26 men who rode the Arizona Territory.
00:53Ride on! Ride on! Ride on!
01:0526 men carefully chosen for their courage and ability formed the Arizona Rangers.
01:10Fame and public acclaim was not their objective.
01:13This is perhaps why the story of these 26 men has never been told until now.
01:23Arizona Territorial Prison, October 31st, 1903.
01:28Two minutes before high noon, Lloyd Quinton and a handful of Arizona's most notorious and hardened criminals were ready to make their bid for freedom.
01:38Noon bell, Canuck.
01:40Reb, you and I take the gatling.
01:54Noon bell, Canuck.
02:14Come on!
02:23Come on!
02:54Come on!
03:07Come on!
03:09Come on!
03:39Come on!
03:46All right. Everybody up here under cover.
03:56You've heard it before, but I'll say it again.
03:59We hang together, we hang separately.
04:02We can hang once.
04:05If anyone objects to my taking over, now's the time to do it.
04:08It depends. Just what have you got in your sights?
04:11Right now we need guns, money, ammunition, and clothes.
04:15And we can get them in Yuma.
04:17Maybe Yuma's heard about the break.
04:19Maybe. But with this gatling aimed down their main street, I don't think anyone will argue.
04:23Well, how are you going to get the gatling into town?
04:25I'll get it in.
04:27After Yuma, what?
04:29First things first.
04:31Well, I like to know where I'm going.
04:33Yeah, we know where I'm going.
04:35All right. I'll tell you.
04:38You're going to be a part of the biggest renegade army the West has ever known.
04:42This land's been asleep for generations.
04:45But we're going to bust it wide open.
04:47You just lost me, Quentin. What are you trying to say?
04:50As long as Arizona isn't a state,
04:52the federal boys aren't going to be too interested in what's going on out here.
04:56You ever hear of the Arizona Rangers?
04:58I've heard.
04:59Well, they're interested.
05:02The way I get it, Captain Reining can't do too much with 26 men.
05:05You know Reining?
05:06Sure, he knew him.
05:08Knew him in the Rough Riders.
05:10Didn't do their friendship much good, though.
05:12What do you mean?
05:13Well, the talk is that Reining helped put you away.
05:16That's personal. Between Reining and myself.
05:19And we'll settle it real soon.
05:22This army you're talking about, where are you getting it?
05:26The same place we just came from.
05:28Territorial prison.
05:30Gatling's going to open it up for us.
05:32And we'll recruit 100 men in less than 48 hours.
05:37Well, what do you say?
05:39I'm in. I'm in.
05:41All right.
05:45Five will get you ten.
05:46He's crazy enough to take on the whole United States Army.
05:49No bad will. You might win.
05:51Besides, it's too late to do anything about it.
05:54It's never too late.
06:00Come on.
06:16Get off that horse, mister.
06:20Stop that gun belt.
06:23Come on, quick.
06:25Now take your clothes off.
06:28Hurry.
06:34Now get.
06:57Hurry.
06:59Hurry.
07:26Howdy.
07:30Stranger, huh?
07:32Coffee black.
07:34You got business in Yuma?
07:37What kind of business?
07:39My own.
07:40Wrong, mister.
07:42A stranger wearing a tied-down gun is everybody's business in this town.
07:45You speaking for yourself?
07:47I'm the mayor of Yuma.
07:50Mayor Ireland.
07:52I used to be the town's mortician.
07:54But I had to close up.
07:56No business.
07:57Maybe you should open up again.
07:59You got any reason why you should open again?
08:02We are 432 folks.
08:04Working our land and running our town.
08:07Happy. Living.
08:09You got a reason, mister?
08:11Anybody's time runs out, deputy.
08:14Anybody in particular?
08:16Yuma's a farm town.
08:18Off the beaten track.
08:20Only strangers we see here are drummers.
08:22Selling seeds and medicine and whatnot.
08:25Maybe you're another kind of salesman.
08:28Maybe I am.
08:30If you are, you'd better move on.
08:34I want to show you something, deputy.
08:36Come here.
08:41Take a look up the street.
08:43Come on. Take a look.
08:55Now look the other way.
09:07I'm looking for someone, all right.
09:09Your marshal, Chet Thompson.
09:11He's in Phoenix.
09:12His wife?
09:13You must be Quentin.
09:15You're in Quentin.
09:25Jawbone.
09:27You go to the telegraph office and let me know what's coming in.
09:31Canuck.
09:37You and Will take the bank.
09:40And no liquor or women.
09:47Hey, you.
09:49You better open up your morgue again.
09:55Travis.
09:56Howdy, marshal.
09:57Good to see you again, Travis.
09:59I see you're still knee-deep in paperwork.
10:01Yeah, nothing's changed.
10:02Only gotten worse.
10:03Worse?
10:04Too much going on.
10:05Labor riots in Bisbee and Douglas.
10:07Irrigation troubles with the Apaches and Nestors.
10:09Chinese being smuggled across the border.
10:11We got rangers spread all over the territory.
10:14Couldn't get them together fast if we had to.
10:16We're the last ones to hear anything.
10:18And the first to get the blame.
10:19So I hear.
10:20How'd you like your old job back?
10:22He can have it.
10:23Anytime he wants it.
10:25Chet Thompson.
10:26Talking about you yesterday.
10:27Won't do you any good, Reining.
10:28I like my job.
10:29Pays me 100 a month and found.
10:30No, I wouldn't try to talk you out of it unless I thought I could.
10:33How's Kit?
10:34Fine.
10:35Pretty as ever.
10:36She sends her love.
10:37Any little ones?
10:38Not yet.
10:39We're still hoping.
10:40Good.
10:41Come on inside.
10:43Sit down, Chet.
10:47Well, how's marshaling in Yuma?
10:49It's been real quiet.
10:50I just came from Phoenix, where I've been representing Yuma.
10:52The territorial assembly.
10:54Sounds dull.
10:55It wasn't.
10:56They want to fold the rangers.
11:00Who does?
11:01Majority of territorial lawmen.
11:03It's not their fault.
11:04It's political pressure.
11:05You've stepped on a lot of political toes in doing your job.
11:08And they still hurt.
11:09Whose toes in particular?
11:11Well, there's Douglas, Tucson, Bisbee, New Gallus.
11:15You've hurted a lot of settlers and miners
11:17You've hurted a lot of settlers and miners
11:19off of some land around those towns.
11:21They were trespassing.
11:22That's Apache land given to them under treaty.
11:24Those settlers and miners were pouring a lot of money into those towns.
11:27And you stopped the flow.
11:29And Apaches don't spend money.
11:30Maybe not, but they're part of Arizona and they have certain rights.
11:33Don't sell me.
11:34Sell the assembly.
11:38What are they going to do?
11:39Hold an investigation.
11:40Make a formal recommendation in 30 days.
11:44What is it, Travis?
11:45Prison break, Captain.
11:46The rest is coming in now.
11:47Lloyd, Quentin, and five men.
11:50Killed four guards and wounded several.
11:52Let's go.
12:02How long has Quentin been out?
12:04Since noon.
12:05You know, the first place he'll go is Yuma.
12:07And Kitt's there alone.
12:09Get a special out to Yuma.
12:11What's your deputy's name?
12:12Kane.
12:13Kane Guthrie.
12:14Tell Guthrie to take Kitt Thompson into protective custody via confirmation.
12:17Quentin's crazy.
12:18There's no telling what he'll do.
12:21Quentin's just as anxious to settle a score with me as you.
12:23Maybe more so.
12:24I'm not worried about me.
12:25But if anything happens to Kitt, how many men can you get together?
12:30Six, maybe eight.
12:32It'll take 24 hours.
12:34Travis, you wait here for any further messages.
12:45This just came in, Captain.
12:47Is that a confirmation from Guthrie?
12:51What does it say?
12:54We'll do as you advise.
12:56Take Kitt Thompson into protective custody.
12:59Signed, Quentin.
13:15KITT THOMPSON
13:29Kitt?
13:31Quentin?
13:33Quentin.
13:36You don't seem surprised to see me.
13:38I've lived dreading this moment.
13:40Knowing someday it'd happen.
13:42It's been a long time.
13:44We lost our chance, Quentin.
13:45We spoiled it.
13:47Chet spoiled it.
13:49You loved me before he joined the gang.
13:52Maybe I did love you.
13:54Once.
13:55I don't know.
13:57We were so young.
13:59Looking for thrills.
14:00Living from moment to moment.
14:02Chet was different.
14:04He didn't want to be a man on the run.
14:07So, he did something about it.
14:09Yeah, he ran to his old friend, Captain Reining.
14:12That's the only way he could get you.
14:15I know one thing.
14:17I thought of a lot of things in five years.
14:19And one of them was coming back to you.
14:21I'm married, Quentin.
14:23What's done is done.
14:25Now, please go.
14:28He's done all right for himself, hasn't he?
14:30He's gotten himself a pardon, a wife, and a little tin badge.
14:34Well, he's not going to have them for long.
14:37I'm going to kill him.
14:39Can't you do one decent thing in your life?
14:42Leave the past alone.
14:44You've got one choice.
14:46Either you ride out of town with me,
14:49or we wait for him to ride into town.
14:52Which will it be?
14:54I'll be ready.
14:56Whenever you say.
14:58Don't try anything funny.
15:00You couldn't get a mile.
15:02Quentin.
15:04How does it feel to push a woman around?
15:15Get the bugger.
15:16Your Honor, that's my bag.
15:23Hey, can I...
15:24I forgot that you sold it.
15:26Get the bugger.
15:27Your Honor, that's my bag.
15:33Hey, can I...
15:34I forgot that you sold it.
15:55Where's the bank money?
15:56In the saddlebags.
15:57Let's talk about the split.
16:02Before you pick up the bags.
16:04We'll split.
16:0550-50.
16:0650 for me,
16:0850 for the rest of you guys.
16:10You hear that?
16:11When he breaks his army out of prison,
16:13our cut will even be smaller.
16:15And there's another thing.
16:17You all heard him say,
16:18no whiskey or women.
16:20You know what he's been doing?
16:22Sparking up the local talent.
16:25You talk too much whale.
16:27You want to run the outfit?
16:29There's only one way to do it.
16:31Strap on that gun belt.
16:36Canuck.
16:38Pick up this bar of soap.
16:40When I holler,
16:42throw it in the air.
16:45When it lands on the floor,
16:47you draw.
16:55Canuck.
16:57Break up the telegraph equipment.
16:59Tell Rug to hook up the Gatling.
17:01We're moving.
17:06Any confirmation from our men?
17:08Only five.
17:09They started back there.
17:10It'll be way after midnight
17:11before they get here.
17:13Terrible timing.
17:15I'll tell you what.
17:16I'll tell you what.
17:17I'll tell you what.
17:18I'll tell you what.
17:19I'll tell you what.
17:20I'll tell you what.
17:21I'll tell you what.
17:22I'll tell you what.
17:23I'll tell you what.
17:24Terrible theme, Travis.
17:26But we can't get a posse together
17:27because of a little Apache trouble.
17:29Makes you wonder just who's out of step.
17:33Apaches?
17:36Give me something to write with.
17:49It might just work, Captain.
17:51Get that out right now.
17:54Get that out right now.
18:13Kit's going, Ireland.
18:14Quentin took her, Chet.
18:15Which way'd they ride out?
18:16West.
18:17Chet, Quentin's riding back to the prison.
18:19He's gonna crash it open with the Gatling.
18:20I'd better get a wire out fast.
18:22It'll do you no good.
18:23But maybe I can fix it.
18:35This just came in from Yuma, Captain.
18:37Can't receive, only send.
18:39Quentin headed for territorial prison.
18:41Urgent he be stopped.
18:43Intends to bust open prison with Gatling gun.
18:46Signed, Chet.
18:48Repeat, can't receive.
18:50We can't wait for the other rangers.
18:51And in spite of anything, Quentin's gotta be stopped.
19:21You men move out.
19:23When you hear the Gatling, that's the signal.
19:51Quentin!
20:17This is Captain Riding.
20:19Can you hear me?
20:21I'm giving you 60 seconds to surrender.
20:24Hurry, Red.
20:3040 seconds, Quentin.
20:32He's bluffing.
20:33I don't know.
20:34I got a funny feeling.
20:37Quentin!
20:38No deal, Riding!
20:40You can't bluff me this time!
20:4230 seconds.
20:4820 seconds.
20:5210!
20:54Hurry, Red!
20:56Time's up, Quentin.
21:02Look up and off to your right, Quentin.
21:12Now to your left.
21:22My next order, the Apaches ride down.
21:25Anybody wants to throw in, holler!
21:29I'm a-throwing in, Riding.
21:32Me too.
21:35Here comes my rifle.
21:51Quentin!
22:09Kit!
22:12Kit!
22:13Headroom!
22:14Kit!
22:16Up here!
22:22It's gonna be all right, honey.
22:23It'll be all right if you do as I tell you.
22:25Go down and tell Riding that I went through those Apaches.
22:29If he doesn't, I'll kill him.
22:46Quentin's got Kit.
22:47Says he'll kill her if you don't let him go.
22:49I can't do that.
22:50What do you mean, you can't?
22:52If I back down to Quentin now, he'll give this territory a bloodbath.
22:55Men, women, and children.
22:56But she's my wife.
22:58Sorry, Chip.
22:59The answer's no.
23:02I'm counting to three, Riding!
23:04Then I'll kill her!
23:06He'll do it, Riding.
23:08The answer's the same.
23:10One!
23:12I'll kill you, Riding.
23:13I'll kill you if anything happens to Kit.
23:16Two!
23:18Quentin!
23:19Kill him!
23:24Riding!
23:27I'm throwing in!
23:28Kill him!
23:33Riding!
23:36I'm throwing in!
23:47I wouldn't keep Kit waiting.
23:59Travis, bring me the file on the Yume incident.
24:01Yes, Captain.
24:15Yesterday sure turned out to be a lucky day for us.
24:20I'm glad you're here.
24:21I'm glad you're here.
24:22I'm glad you're here.
24:23I'm glad you're here.
24:24I'm glad you're here.
24:25I'm glad you're here.
24:26I got lucky.
24:27You got lucky?
24:29I wouldn't call it lucky.
24:31You wouldn't.
24:33We wouldn't have had a puss if it hadn't been for the Apaches.
24:34That was luck.
24:36And Quentin didn't hurt Kit Thompson.
24:38I call that real luck in my book.
24:42Maybe you're not reading the right book.
24:45Where're you going, Captain?
24:47There's a church down the road.
24:49A church?
24:53I'll be there.
24:56I want to thank God for what happened yesterday.
25:20This is the story of 26 men
