00:00When an attractive girl from the East inherits an oil field and is shrewd enough to make
00:17it pay off, that was news in the early West.
00:21But it was also news when a young doctor from Rising Springs became involved in the inheritance.
00:27Max Allen stars as The Frontier Doctor.
00:34Good morning, Doctor.
00:53What are you doing up so early?
00:54Morning, Miss Cameron.
00:55I've got a sick boy upstairs.
00:57How's your cold?
00:58All gone, thanks to your medicine.
01:02Morning, Clint.
01:02Morning, Doc.
01:05Hello, Donna.
01:06How are you, Clint?
01:07Fine, just fine.
01:09But I haven't had any luck yet finding you a drilling crew.
01:12Oh, I meant to tell you, you don't need to bother now.
01:16I've located Mike Shea, who used to be Father's head driller, and he got some men for me.
01:21Well, that's great.
01:23You're going to start soon?
01:24Yes.
01:25There's a little work to be done on the old valley number one rig, but we should be able
01:29to start drilling tomorrow.
01:31I'm taking some groceries out now to the crew.
01:34Mike is waiting for me outside.
01:36I'm a little late.
01:37Go ahead.
01:38I'll see you later.
01:46Good morning, Mike.
01:47Good morning.
01:58Good morning, Mike.
02:10They're shooting at us!
02:11Ha!
02:12Come on!
02:14They're shooting at us!
02:16Ha!
02:17Come on!
02:44Come on!
02:45Come on!
02:48Ha!
02:49Ha!
02:50Look out, Mike!
03:13I got an urgent call from the hotel clerk that Miss Cameron had an accident.
03:21Yeah, you're a lucky girl. You're not hurt.
03:25Suffering more from shock than anything else.
03:27Oh, I can believe that.
03:29It was a horrible experience.
03:31Have any idea why those men were after you?
03:34Doctor, I'm gambling for millions.
03:37I haven't any idea who tried to kill me.
03:40But where there's money involved, even your best friend can become a Judas.
03:45I'm here trying to continue the oil drilling operation my father started on his ranch before he died.
03:51I admire your courage, but it's a rough game.
03:54Watch your step.
03:56I know. Everyone warns me it's no business for a woman.
04:00But, well, it's not only the money that's involved.
04:04Dad always said there was a big oil pool under that field, and I'm going to prove that he was right.
04:09And the last thing I'll do is sell out.
04:12Obviously, someone else thinks there's oil there, too.
04:17Well, good luck to you.
04:19If I can ever do anything for you, either professionally or privately, don't hesitate to call on me.
04:24Thank you, Doctor.
04:26I'm likely to need plenty of help, and I'll certainly remember you.
04:30Goodbye.
04:31Goodbye.
04:40All right, Doc.
04:41Hello, Clint.
04:43How's Miss Cameron?
04:45Oh, she'll be all right. She's suffering more from shock than anything else.
04:48Well, that's good.
04:49How well do you know her, Clint?
04:51Well, I knew her when she was a kid.
04:54Knew her father for years. He wasn't much good, a drunken, long-shot wildcatter.
04:59She came out from the East about a month ago, and since we're both interested in the oil business, we've got pretty well acquainted.
05:05Why do you ask, Doc?
05:07Oh, I don't know.
05:08I just thought maybe somebody ought to persuade her to sell out before she gets in any more trouble.
05:12Mm-hmm.
05:13Well, that's an idea, all right.
05:15It'd certainly be a lot safer for her, and I'm sure I can find her a buyer.
05:19Uh, do you mind if I go see her?
05:22No, go ahead.
05:23Thanks.
05:33Come in.
05:37Why, Clint, how nice of you to drop in.
05:40But why don't you warn a lady?
05:44If I'd ever thought that long, spindly-legged tomboy would ever grow up in...
05:48I might have had long legs, but they were never spindly.
05:52Or were they?
05:53They were.
05:56But they aren't now.
05:58Oh, Clint.
05:59You're so plain and varnished honest.
06:02That's what I like about you.
06:04Well, I'm glad you like something about me.
06:06Because I don't think you will after what I have to say.
06:10You want me to quit?
06:12Yes.
06:15Clint, can I tell you why I've got to go ahead?
06:18If it'll help any.
06:22When Dad died, all he left me were a few worthless stalks, cats and dogs, and this ranch.
06:28The last thing he said to me was,
06:29Hang on to Section 9, Donna.
06:31There's a million barrels under it.
06:33Now, this may sound like a cruel thing to say, Donna, but you know your father's pride.
06:38But don't you see, Clint, why I've got to go ahead?
06:41That I owe it to Dad.
06:44That I'd never forgive myself if I didn't.
06:47No, I don't.
06:50What do you suggest?
06:51Well, the only smart thing to do is sell.
06:54Can I?
06:56I think I can dig up a buyer.
06:58And one thing you must know, Donna.
07:00If I can't, I'll die trying.
07:03I know, Clint.
07:05Somehow, I think I've always known.
07:08Of course, it's an unproven site.
07:10But the structure's always been promising, and with the rig already set up,
07:14I think I can get you $25,000.
07:19What would the field be worth after I hit oil?
07:22First, you have to hit it.
07:24But if you should ever change your mind, my offer's still open.
07:27Thanks, Clint.
07:30I know you think I'm a stubborn little fool.
07:32But it's because of Dad. You understand, don't you?
07:36Yeah, I guess so.
07:38Bye, Donna.
07:48We came just about as close to killing her as we could the last time.
07:51If that didn't scare her out, what will?
07:58All right, then.
08:00If we can't scare her out,
08:02we'll run her crew off the job and wreck the rig.
08:05And we won't be fussy about how we do it.
08:08There are millions involved in this deal, so it's no holds barred.
08:12Line up three or four more men, and we'll ride out there tomorrow.
08:19You've kind of changed your tune about hurting a dame, haven't you?
08:22What do you mean?
08:24All I want is to stop that well until I can deal her out of it.
08:28It's always bad business to rough up a woman, you know that.
08:31Sure.
08:38All right, boys, cover up and go to it.
08:41But try not to hurt anybody.
08:57Come on, let's go.
09:30I want to apologize for calling you, doctor.
09:33This isn't a professional visit.
09:35But you did tell me you'd help me if I got into trouble, didn't you?
09:38Of course. I heard about the trouble you had out the oil rig and I'd be happy to do anything I can.
09:44I suppose I should appreciate your advice, but I know you'd only tell me to sell out and I'm not going to.
09:51At least not yet.
09:53All I want is some help protecting my men and property.
09:56Well, did you talk to the sheriff?
09:58My driller, Mike Shea, reported the attack.
10:01But all the men were masked, so the sheriff doesn't have very much to go on.
10:05But you're going ahead anyway.
10:07I certainly am, if I can talk the sheriff into furnishing me some protection for my men.
10:12And I thought that's where you might help me.
10:15Do you know the sheriff very well?
10:17Oh, yes. I'm sure he'll cooperate any way he can.
10:21Doctor, someone's been listening.
10:29Wait!
10:33Hey, wait a minute.
10:34What do you want?
10:35Why are you listening in Miss Cameron's door?
10:37It's no crime to stop in the hall and pick your food, is it?
10:41Maybe you ought to go to the sheriff and have a talk with him.
10:44You just might be one of the fellows he's looking for.
10:47You just might be one of the fellows he's looking for.
11:18Thanks, Donna, for bringing the sheriff.
11:21That's youse in your head.
11:23Who is he?
11:24The name's Steve Herrick, works part-time for Clint Forbes.
11:27Clint?
11:28Why, you surely don't think he had anything to do with it?
11:31I don't know, but Clint's in the oil business, and it might be to his advantage to force you to sell out.
11:36Oh, no, that's ridiculous.
11:38Why, Clint was the one person who understood my father.
11:42He protected him when everybody else called him a drunken crackpot.
11:46Why, he's offered to help me any number of times.
11:50You can't arrest him just because that man used to work for him.
11:54It's up to you, Sheriff.
11:55I'll take this man over to the office and question him.
12:05How'd you make out with the sheriff?
12:07All right.
12:08This time I'm really in the clear.
12:10Boss, I know Steve too well.
12:12He wouldn't be listening at that door on his own.
12:14Somebody paid him to do it.
12:16Yeah, I know.
12:18But if we didn't hire him, you tell me who did.
12:23Get out of here.
12:30Donna!
12:32Hello, Clint.
12:33How are you?
12:36I just came from the sheriff's office.
12:39I hear you've been having more trouble.
12:41Oh, it was nothing.
12:42In fact, the drilling's going very well now.
12:45We'll get the boiler repaired and tapped into the oil pool any day now.
12:50But...
12:51Well...
12:53I want to talk to you, Clint.
12:55Sure.
12:56Let's sit down.
13:04Clint...
13:05I'm afraid I'm beginning to lose my nerve.
13:09Why?
13:10You're over the worst of it now.
13:13I know, but I'm worried.
13:15There's been one man wounded and...
13:17Who knows what's going to happen in the next few days.
13:21So, what do you want to do?
13:23Clint...
13:24This is a man's job.
13:27Living in fear of being murdered every day...
13:32I've decided to sell out.
13:37That's quite a surprise.
13:40But my offer still stands.
13:42Twenty-five thousand.
13:44It might even be worth a little more now.
13:46With all the trouble I've had...
13:48Someone else must think it's worth a lot more.
13:55We caught a man last night listening at my door.
13:58The sheriff said he worked for you.
14:02That's right, Donna, but he hasn't been on my payroll in six months.
14:06If I could only find out who he is working for...
14:09I'm sure they'd pay me the price I'm asking.
14:11How much do you want?
14:13Well, it seems to me the field should be worth a hundred thousand dollars.
14:17Don't you think so?
14:19Oh, no, I couldn't possibly raise...
14:21That is, find anyone who could pay that much.
14:25That's all right, Clint.
14:27I understand.
14:30But if Steve Herrick wasn't working for you...
14:33Then he's probably working for the Joslin Oil Company.
14:36I'll contact them.
14:38I'll bet they'll pay the hundred thousand.
14:41Give me until tomorrow. I'll see what I can do.
14:44I'm sure you can do it.
14:47It would be all cash, wouldn't it?
14:51Yes, of course.
14:54Thanks.
14:56Goodbye.
14:57Goodbye.
15:08You hear that?
15:09Yeah.
15:10Well, see if you can find Steve Herrick and who he's working for.
15:13Somebody else is trying to beat us out of that oil lease.
15:15If we can't find him, we're forced to raise $100,000 by tomorrow.
15:18I'm sure he's left town.
15:20But I'll look her up.
15:30Morning, Fred.
15:31Morning, Doc.
15:33Hey, Mike.
15:35Hello.
15:36Hello, Doc.
15:37How you doing in town?
15:38Some more trouble at the well?
15:39No.
15:41I just got fired when Clint Ford bought out Miss Cameron.
15:44She paid me off and gave me a bonus, too.
15:47So she sold out.
15:49Clint going ahead with the drilling?
15:51Yeah.
15:52A lot of blowing today, too.
15:55Too bad you couldn't stay around for the payoff.
15:58I'll be there.
15:59I'm riding out there right now.
16:01I sure don't want to miss that show.
16:08Hello, Doc.
16:09Been waiting long?
16:10No, not very.
16:12I've got some news for you.
16:13Yes?
16:14Miss Cameron sold out to Clint.
16:16Is that right?
16:18Maybe that explains part of it.
16:20Explains what?
16:22Clint may have bought Miss Cameron out, but he can't buy me off.
16:26There's a matter of attempted murder of Miss Cameron
16:28and those men that were injured on the oil, Derek.
16:30This case isn't closed yet.
16:32Yes, I know.
16:34This case isn't closed yet.
16:36Yes, that adds up.
16:38Where does this leave Clint?
16:39Puts him number one on my suspect list.
16:41He ended up with her property,
16:43so it's a good bet he had something to do with scaring her out.
16:46Anyway, I'm going to have a talk with him.
16:48He's out at the oil rig now.
16:51They expect to bring it in this afternoon.
16:53I've never seen one of those things blow in.
16:55Is it all right if I go along with you?
16:57All right, let's go.
17:05We've just sunk the last piece of pipe, boss.
17:07We're standing by ready to cap it.
17:09All right.
17:10Tell them to go ahead and let it blow.
17:27What are you doing here?
17:29I'm here to see Miss Cameron.
17:32What are you doing here?
17:34Well, you know, Mr. Forbes, I've put a lot of time in on that old rig.
17:37Just want to see what happens when you bring her in.
17:40All right.
17:42Yeah, I guess so.
17:53Fill him up.
18:02Here she comes.
18:23It's a real payoff, Ed.
18:25It sure is, boss. There's a lot of pressure in there.
18:27You want to see what you really got?
18:29Huh?
18:36There's no oil in there.
18:38That's right. Not a drop.
18:41Nothing but mud and water screwed up in that gas pocket you just tapped.
18:47You know it's only a gas pocket.
18:49You're a big greenhorn.
18:51Why do you suppose old man Cameron stopped drilling that field for last year?
18:55You know you're going to be the laughingstock of town?
18:59You mean he found out there was nothing but gas here?
19:02That's right.
19:04I don't believe it.
19:06Because Donna must have known it, too. Why did she start drilling again?
19:09Oh, she wasn't drilling. She was just going through the motions, too.
19:12She found some easy market to sell out to.
19:15Looks like she found one.
19:25Hey, Mr. Forbes!
19:56What's wrong, Mike?
19:58Sure glad to see you, Sheriff. You've got a job to do.
20:01Clint Forbes has gone after Miss Cameron.
20:03Huh? What are you talking about?
20:05Well, he found out that she sold him a no-good field.
20:08I had to open up my big mouth.
20:10How long ago?
20:11He hadn't got much of a head start on you.
20:13He took the back road. Let's go.
20:15Let's get him!
20:26Let's go.
20:47Who is it?
20:49Letter for you, Miss Cameron.
20:56Why, you no-good little thief!
21:00What are you talking about?
21:02About $100,000. Where is it?
21:04It's safe. You made the deal. Everything's legal.
21:08Legal? You hired Steve Herrick, didn't you?
21:11You were the other party interested in that oil land, weren't you?
21:14Weren't you?
21:16Sure I hired him. It's a rough game, remember?
21:19You said so yourself.
21:21Why, you...
21:26You...
21:47You're all through, Clint. Why don't you give up?
21:51Sheriff, arrest this man.
21:53He was the one that raided my wells and who tried to kill me.
21:56Can you prove it?
21:58I'll sign a warrant or anything else you want.
22:00Don't let her get away with it, Sheriff.
22:02She's the one who hired Steve Herrick.
22:04She paid him to listen at her door.
22:06He had every reason in the world to be listening at my door.
22:09I hired him as a bodyguard.
22:11There's no law against that, is there?
22:14Bodyguard?
22:16Looks like you can take care of yourself.
22:18That was in self-defense, Doctor.
22:20He struck me.
22:21Come along, Clint.
22:23Doc, you better come along too and fix up his arm.
22:28And don't you leave town until I tell you,
22:30because I want to talk to you.
22:33You knew that oil field wasn't any good all along.
22:49Is Miss Cameron in, Fred?
22:51Yeah, the Sheriff's just checking her out.
22:56Good morning, Doctor.
22:58Those pills you gave me for insomnia didn't do me a bit of good.
23:02I never closed my eyes last night.
23:05There's nothing wrong with the pills.
23:07If you think it was my conscience, Doctor, that was bothering me,
23:10you're wrong.
23:12I didn't do anything illegal.
23:14No, I suppose not.
23:16But you sure handed Clint a sharp deal.
23:19Don't think too badly of me, Doc.
23:21Remember, P.T. Barnum said,
23:24there's a sucker born every minute.
23:26Yes, I suppose that's one way to look at it.
23:29And why not?
23:30Clint pulled several crooked deals on my father,
23:33and he tried his best to run me out.
23:35I only paid him back with his own medicine.
23:38And made yourself a nice chunk of money on the side.
23:47Here's enough money to pay for the medical expenses
23:50for the men that were injured in the oil fields.
23:53And what's left over is your medical fee for attending me.
23:56I'm sure the men and their families will appreciate it,
23:59but you don't owe me anything.
24:02Of course not.
24:04It's for the Rising Springs Charity Fund.
24:09There's a lot of money in it.
24:11I'm sure it's worth it.
24:14There's my stage.
24:16You've been so anxious to get rid of me, Sheriff.
24:19We'd better be going or I'll miss it.
24:21Oh, no, you won't. Come on.
24:23Come on.
24:42I don't suppose I'll be seeing you gentlemen again.
24:45I hope not.
24:46Get her out of here.
24:47Now!
24:48Get!
24:49Now!
24:50Now!
24:53Good riddance.
24:55What happened to Clinton and his gang?
24:57They pleaded guilty and the judge sentenced them
24:59to two years for attempted murder of Donna
25:01and the men at the oil fields.
25:03I like to see the day he catches up with it.
25:05I bet you by the time he serves his sentence
25:07he parlays that $100,000 into a million.
25:10Well, it could be, but I still say good riddance.
25:17I was wrong about Donna making her first million.
25:20I heard later that she ran into somebody just a little smarter
25:23and the $100,000 she took from Clint changed hands again.
25:27This time Donna was the one who was broke and in jail.
25:31There's an old adage that says,
25:33if you want peace and contentment,
25:36go out and earn it with an honest day's work.
