Beverly Blake, the 'Blonde Comet," and the daughter of a tire-manufacturer, gets behind the wheel of a race-car, and is soon tearing up the tracks and winning races in Italy, France and Germany (obviously prior to 1938 when those countries were no longer running international car races in Europe.) She comes back to race on American tracks. She meets Jim Flynn, another race-driver, and a rivalry is created, along with a romance. Beverly gives up her chance to win THE BIG RACE by letting Jim race her car and he wins. His win also means a triumph for the racing-car carburetor he has invented and also for the tires manufactured by her father. It may have been somewhat of a setback for Women's Liberation, though.

00:04:20We're now in the fourth hour of this great classic.
00:04:24The motors are spinning around the track in a reckless fashion.
00:04:29It's rather difficult to tell definitely who is leading at the moment.
00:04:33The drivers are continually passing and repassing each other.
00:04:39However, I shall have the official positions for you shortly.
00:04:45The big surprise of the race, however, is the blonde comet.
00:04:52She's that American driver you know.
00:04:55He's driving almost as well as the men.
00:04:58In fact, at the last check-up, I believe she was fourth.
00:05:03Or was it fifth? Well, no matter.
00:05:06The race is still being run.
00:05:09♪♪
00:05:36Incidentally, the British champion, Sir Wickham Grantley,
00:05:42is bowling along at a tremendous speed.
00:05:46He's still in 12th place.
00:05:49♪♪
00:06:10Hey, Curly.
00:06:13Boy, oh boy.
00:06:15What a sweetheart.
00:06:19Curly!
00:06:27Did you call me?
00:06:29Bring me a half-inch socket wrench, will you?
00:06:31Half-inch socket wrench, coming right up.
00:06:37Hey, you know something?
00:06:39That blonde comet, boy, if she's as good as she looks,
00:06:42there's gonna be some spin-dizzy drivers around here this time next week.
00:06:45Well, she isn't that good.
00:06:47Well, she's good enough to drive with them foreign races.
00:06:49Yeah, but she wasn't good enough to win any of them.
00:06:51Yeah, well, just the same. If you ask me...
00:06:53I didn't ask you.
00:06:55Well, the writer, she got to be in this racket anyway.
00:06:57It's no game for a woman. It's tough enough for a man.
00:06:59If I was her old man, I'd spank her good.
00:07:02Yeah, well, he'd have to catch her first.
00:07:04Boy, oh boy, you're gonna have to do the same thing when she gets on that track.
00:07:07Well, she better keep out of my way, that's all.
00:07:09Oh, boy, I wish she'd get in my way.
00:07:11Car or no car.
00:07:13What a sweetheart.
00:07:15Come on, come on, keep your mind on the race.
00:07:17Here, tighten up those nuts.
00:07:38Hello, Texas.
00:07:40How's Swede?
00:07:42Getting along okay. Doc says he's got better than even chance now.
00:07:44How did he look?
00:07:46Pretty terrible.
00:07:48He was white as a ghost before the transfusion.
00:07:50I was white as a ghost after.
00:07:52How much blood did you give him?
00:07:54I don't know. When I woke up, it was all over.
00:07:56Well, then how do you feel?
00:07:58I feel a little wobbly in the legs.
00:08:00Doc wanted me to stay around and rest a while,
00:08:02but I told him I got a lot of work to do on my car before the race.
00:08:04So I better get to work and get this thing straightened up.
00:08:10That's a laugh.
00:08:12What's a laugh?
00:08:14A Swede like Jensen with a couple of quarts of old southern blood in him.
00:08:16Yeah, it'd be funny if he came out of the hospital with a Texas drawl.
00:08:22Wouldn't that be something?
00:08:26Oh, uh, Swede wished his folk good luck in the race.
00:08:28Said he's sorry he wouldn't be in there throwing dust in their eyes.
00:08:32Look, Texas.
00:08:34You don't think you have a chance in that hunk of iron, do you?
00:08:36Might as well fall apart in the first ten laps
00:08:38and put you where Swede is, or maybe worse.
00:08:40Why don't you get smart and forget it before it's too late?
00:08:44What's the matter? You're afraid I'm going to beat you?
00:08:46No, no, not with that meatwracker.
00:08:48I wouldn't be too sure about that.
00:08:50I hit 111 up at Muroc the other day.
00:08:52I'm almost a sense to qualify.
00:08:54And if you don't, it'll be the best thing that ever happened to you.
00:08:56Why do you say that?
00:08:58Look, you haven't had any experience.
00:09:00It's your first race, isn't it?
00:09:02Yeah.
00:09:04You'll find it's plenty dangerous, even for men who've been in it for years.
00:09:06It's no different from riding bucking broncos, you know.
00:09:08Now you're talking like my old man.
00:09:10He used to say,
00:09:12take a cowboy off his heart,
00:09:14he's a pretty helpless galoot.
00:09:16Then he never was far enough out of the state
00:09:18to kick the Texas mud off his boots.
00:09:20Just the same, he must have been a pretty smart old man.
00:09:22Yeah, he was.
00:09:24But I'm going to prove he was wrong
00:09:26about that helpless galoot business.
00:09:28Well, see, I can't argue out of risking your neck,
00:09:30so good luck, kid, but be careful.
00:09:32Thanks.
00:09:34That's, uh, that.
00:09:36Just give me a yell.
00:09:38Okay, Tim.
00:10:00Okay, you got a clear two miles, nothing ahead of you.
00:10:02Go to it.
00:10:32How much further is it to Los Angeles, Miss Beverly?
00:10:34We're in Los Angeles now, Jenny.
00:10:36We passed the city limit sign four hours ago.
00:10:38Oh.
00:10:40Well, looks like we go over the hill.
00:11:02Well, how do you like that?
00:11:04Nothing like having your own private racetrack.
00:11:06All the nerve.
00:11:32Let's go.
00:12:02How did she go?
00:12:04Pretty good.
00:12:06I didn't have her all the way down, though.
00:12:08I think I'll try her again.
00:12:10Okay, let's go.
00:12:32Let's go.
00:13:02What's the matter?
00:13:04Didn't you see that sign?
00:13:06Yes, I saw it.
00:13:08What of it?
00:13:10Well, what are you doing in here?
00:13:12This is a public highway, isn't it?
00:13:14Yes.
00:13:16Well, that's what I'm using it for.
00:13:18Well, I should think you'd have more brains than to be coming...
00:13:20Oh.
00:13:22Now, if you'll be good enough
00:13:24to move that yard dog out of the way,
00:13:26I'd like to get going.
00:13:50I, uh...
00:13:52hope I'll have the pleasure of seeing you again
00:13:54at Ascot.
00:13:56Do you think you'll qualify?
00:13:58Why, I'll run you out of gas, sister.
00:14:02Oh, you'll have a lot of dust in your eye.
00:14:06Oh, you'll have a lot of dust in your eye.
00:14:36Gee, the blonde comet.
00:14:38Boy, what a sweetheart.
00:15:06What are you looking at?
00:15:08The queen's tent.
00:15:10Why don't you get a load of that maid of hers?
00:15:12What a sweetheart.
00:15:14Come on, snap out of it.
00:15:16Give me a screwdriver.
00:15:18Get me a bottle of pop, will you, Jenny?
00:15:20Sure.
00:15:22Miss Beverly.
00:15:36♪
00:16:03Hot, ain't it?
00:16:05Yeah, yeah. How about that screwdriver?
00:16:07Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:16:09♪
00:16:16It is hot, isn't it?
00:16:18How about a cold drink?
00:16:21I said, how about a cold drink?
00:16:23Okay, give me a bottle of pop.
00:16:25Coming right up.
00:16:27♪
00:16:31Hot, isn't it?
00:16:33It is.
00:16:35Two ice cold drinks, please.
00:16:37Make it four, buddy.
00:16:40Come on, a little service.
00:16:45What did you say?
00:16:47Four bottles of pop, please.
00:16:50Okay.
00:16:54My name's Curly.
00:16:56Curly Watson.
00:16:57Curly?
00:16:59Oh, well, when I was a kid, I had curls down to here.
00:17:02The name stuck, but the hair didn't.
00:17:05Oh.
00:17:07What's your name, toots?
00:17:09Jenny.
00:17:11Jenny?
00:17:13No, not Jenny. Jenny.
00:17:15Jenny Jorgensen is Swedish, you know.
00:17:17Oh, Jenny Jorgensen.
00:17:19Yeah, that's right. Jenny Jorgensen.
00:17:21Do you speak Swedish?
00:17:25Yes, of course.
00:17:27All my family is Swedish.
00:17:29I was born in Sweden.
00:17:31If you can speak English, do you think you speak good English?
00:17:34I think very well of their country.
00:17:36They should be very grateful.
00:17:38I'll send it to the family.
00:17:40Send it back?
00:17:42Yes.
00:17:44Mister, please.
00:17:46Have you got that pop ready, sir?
00:17:48Here it is.
00:17:49Thank you very much.
00:17:50Forty cents.
00:17:51Yes, sir.
00:17:52Oh, this is on me, toots.
00:17:54Oh, come on.
00:18:02Thank you very much, Mr. Curley.
00:18:04Oh, that's all right, toots.
00:18:05Hey, what are you doing after the race?
00:18:08I say, what are you doing after the race?
00:18:11Oh, here's your drinks.
00:18:13Thanks.
00:18:15I met you the day before yesterday on the road, remember?
00:18:18Oh, yeah.
00:18:19I'm with Jimmy Flynn, car number 75.
00:18:22Boy, did you burn him up.
00:18:25Was he mad.
00:18:27Oh, I guess I'd better be going.
00:18:30So long, toots.
00:18:32So long, Miss Comet.
00:18:33Beverly.
00:18:44Told you I'd tell you, didn't I?
00:18:46Yes, you told me that two or three months ago.
00:18:48I told you.
00:18:49I told you.
00:18:50I told you.
00:18:51I told you.
00:18:52I told you.
00:18:53I told you.
00:18:54I told you.
00:18:55Misscat, mister.
00:18:57Miss истории.
00:18:58How ya, miss?
00:19:00Miss história.
00:19:01Miss historia, I see.
00:19:02All right.
00:19:04Go, go, go.
00:19:06Trouble.
00:19:07Power.
00:19:08Wrecked.
00:19:09Fest.
00:19:11By now, you'd figure out how I found you.
00:19:15And how you made me look 19, you think?
00:19:18Well, what the hell are you trying to say?
00:19:21That you're finished?
00:19:22What the hell are you talking about?
00:19:24If you were a young guy, why, I'd...
00:19:26Don't give me that.
00:19:27Don't let my age stop you.
00:19:28Anytime you want to start anything, go ahead.
00:19:30Oh.
00:19:32And you're yellow, too, on top of that.
00:19:34Boy, that's telling him, Warning.
00:19:36Well, he had it coming.
00:19:38Did you qualify, son?
00:19:39Yes, sir.
00:19:40Good.
00:19:41Say, uh, I need a couple of new plugs.
00:19:44Well, they're right in the bottom right-hand drawer there.
00:19:46Help yourself.
00:19:51Say, Tex, I don't like the look of this.
00:19:53I don't like the look of those two rear tires of yours.
00:19:55You better put on some new rubber.
00:19:57Can't afford it.
00:19:58Well, they're sharp and dangerous.
00:20:01You don't want to break your neck, do you?
00:20:03No, but they'll have to do.
00:20:05Say, young fella, take two of those new tires there and put them on.
00:20:09I'd rather lose the price of two new tires than see you lose your life.
00:20:12That's mighty nice of you, Warning.
00:20:14Thanks.
00:20:15Oh, forget it.
00:20:24How's the new carburetor, Jim?
00:20:26Fine, Barney.
00:20:27Cuts my gas consumption about 40%.
00:20:29Well, don't cut down the speed, too, does it, Jim?
00:20:31No, not at all.
00:20:32Well, you know, I got a good pal in Washington
00:20:34who's in on the defense setup.
00:20:36If you like, I'll put a plug in for you.
00:20:38You know, Uncle Sam is going to need a lot of carburetors,
00:20:40and the less gas they use, the better.
00:20:42That'll be great, Barney.
00:20:43Well, can't promise anything, but, uh, it's nothing like trying.
00:20:46You know, the old guy with the whiskers,
00:20:48if you got something he needs, well, he's a good customer.
00:20:53Attention, all drivers.
00:20:55Assemble at starting line for final instructions.
00:20:58All drivers, please.
00:21:01That's us.
00:21:03Here's my helmet, Jenny.
00:21:06Good luck, Jim.
00:21:07Thanks, Barney.
00:21:12Oh, Miss Beverly, your gloves.
00:21:14Thanks.
00:21:15Both of you men have driven this course here before
00:21:17and realized how tough it is.
00:21:19Today, this track is tougher than ever
00:21:21because of the rain last night.
00:21:23It would be dangerous to attempt a speed ricket here,
00:21:26so I know many of you will try to wear the winning boys today
00:21:29to inform the scores.
00:21:31But you do so at a tremendous risk.
00:21:33You all know the rules, and all I ask is that you observe them
00:21:37and follow the lines of good sportsmanship.
00:21:39Good luck.
00:21:40How do you do?
00:21:41Hello.
00:21:42I reckon a lot of us are just going to be
00:21:44trailing you around today.
00:21:46I mean, that is, on the track.
00:21:48I don't know.
00:21:49This is my first experience on a dirt track.
00:21:51You boys will probably drive rings around me.
00:21:54Said she over-modestly, not meaning a word of it.
00:21:58As is the custom on all tracks today,
00:22:00this race will be conducted under the rules and regulations
00:22:03of the 3A.
00:22:05Today's race, ladies and gentlemen,
00:22:07should be a real thriller,
00:22:08for here on this mild track are several,
00:22:10some of the country's leading drivers,
00:22:12and the first time on any American track,
00:22:15a woman driver, the Blonde Comet,
00:22:17who will attempt to match speed with veteran drivers
00:22:20whose races number in the hundreds.
00:22:22It takes a lot of nerve,
00:22:23but advanced information from abroad
00:22:25indicates this little lady knows all the answers
00:22:27when it comes to race driving.
00:22:29You can look for thrills and spills galore
00:22:31before this race is over,
00:22:32as it is next to the last tune-up race
00:22:34before the big track at Indianapolis.
00:22:36Ha, ha, ha.
00:22:47♪♪
00:22:59The cars are just coming around the track,
00:23:01and it's just a matter of minutes before the race.
00:23:03There's the green flag,
00:23:04that's the signal for the race to go,
00:23:05and they're off!
00:23:06♪♪
00:23:14Another highlight about today's race
00:23:16is car number 44, driven by Texas Ray Roberts.
00:23:19Texas is the youngest driver on the track today,
00:23:22a boy who worked his way up from the midget cars
00:23:24to dirt track driving.
00:23:26He makes his debut here today
00:23:27with a bunch of real seasoned veterans.
00:23:29One of the most reckless of all drivers
00:23:31right now passing Texas is Red Stewart.
00:23:33Red will be remembered for his, shall we say,
00:23:36crazy antics in his last race here.
00:23:38He has burned brick more cars
00:23:40than any other driver we have had.
00:23:42There was a little argument between these two boys
00:23:44before the race,
00:23:45and I hope they both have pulled off efficiently
00:23:47to keep their minds on driving.
00:23:49But they are both out to win,
00:23:50and anything can happen, and usually does.
00:23:53♪♪
00:24:03♪♪
00:24:13♪♪
00:24:23♪♪
00:24:36Why don't you come on over to the pit?
00:24:37You can see a lot better over there.
00:24:39So?
00:24:40So.
00:24:41Come on.
00:24:42Okay.
00:24:43All right.
00:24:44Good.
00:24:45♪♪
00:24:51There's a skid on the upper right-hand turn,
00:24:53and another.
00:24:55The skids are coming fast and furious.
00:24:57I promised you a day of drills and spills galore,
00:24:59and it looks like you're going to get them.
00:25:01All right.
00:25:03Just hit this oil can.
00:25:05See?
00:25:06Just like I said,
00:25:07this is a real place to watch a race.
00:25:09Those guys won't come up in my lap, will they?
00:25:11Oh, no.
00:25:12They never come up here.
00:25:14I hope.

00:33:02Mr. Oldfield?
00:33:03That's me.
00:33:04I'm Beverly Blake.
00:33:05Oh, yes.
00:33:06You drove a great race yesterday.
00:33:08Thanks.
00:33:09You've driven a couple of great races yourself, according to my dad.
00:33:12He told me to be sure and look you up and give you his regards.
00:33:15Remember Cannonball Blake?
00:33:17I sure do.
00:33:18Is he your father?
00:33:20Well, unless my mother's been kidding me all these years, he is.
00:33:23Old Cannonball Blake.
00:33:26He drove some great races, too.
00:33:28I guess you must be a chip off the old block.
00:33:30How is he and where is he?
00:33:32He's fine.
00:33:33He's been in the tire business for the last 10 years.
00:33:36He puts out that Trojan tire.
00:33:38Is that so?
00:33:39Yes.
00:33:40That's why I'm racing.
00:33:41The big companies have all the good drivers signed up,
00:33:43so I'm doing what I can to get him some publicity.
00:33:46Well, I guess you're doing a good job of it,
00:33:48if your last race was any example of it.
00:33:50I was just lucky.
00:33:52Takes more than luck to beat boys like Jimmy Finn.
00:33:54Young lady, he's good.
00:33:56Yes, he is.
00:33:57Where is he from?
00:33:58Right here.
00:33:59He was born in Pomona.
00:34:00Used to be a grease monkey around my garage.
00:34:02He's got plenty up here.
00:34:03You know, he's got a new carburetor that we're going to make a lot of money out of someday.
00:34:08That's fine.
00:34:09I guess he's a nice fellow, underneath all his gruffness, sometimes.
00:34:14What do you mean?
00:34:15Well, let him tell you all about it.
00:34:18Well, I must get along.
00:34:19It was so nice to meet you.
00:34:22Give my best to old Cannonball, won't you?
00:34:24I certainly will.
00:34:30Oh, by the way, I hear they're taking up a collection for that Texas boy.
00:34:34Yeah.
00:34:35Well, why leave me out?
00:34:37No one told me about it.
00:34:38Well, if Jim's taking care of that, you can find him down to his garage
00:34:41on the corner of Ventura and Sunny Slope.
00:34:43Fine.
00:34:44I'll stop by.
00:34:45Well, here, take this along and give it to Jim for me.
00:34:50I'll be glad.
00:34:51Save me a trip.
00:34:52I'll be glad to, Mr. Olsen.
00:34:54Well, goodbye.
00:34:55So long.
00:34:56Bye.
00:35:04Hiya, boys.
00:35:05Hi.
00:35:06Hi, Charlie.
00:35:07Here's $12.50, Jim, from the boys at the Hollywood Garage.
00:35:09That's right.
00:35:10How many stand now?
00:35:11200 and $12.50.
00:35:13Is everybody in?
00:35:14Yeah, just us.
00:35:15Let's see then.
00:35:16We're shy $87.50.
00:35:18Yeah.
00:35:19Wait a minute.
00:35:28Well, that boosts us to $2.30.
00:35:29That's the best I can do.
00:35:46Take care of it, Winnie Pearlie.
00:35:48OK.
00:35:49Well, so long, Jim.
00:35:50So long, Pearlie.
00:35:51Tell the boys thanks.
00:35:52OK.
00:35:54Hello, Miss Comet.
00:35:55I mean Miss Beverly.
00:35:57Hello.
00:35:58Hiya, toots.
00:35:59Hello.
00:36:00Fill her up and check the oil and give me some water.
00:36:03Yes, sir.
00:36:04Yes, ma'am.
00:36:16Hello.
00:36:17Hello.
00:36:18Ronnie Oldfield asked me to deliver this.
00:36:21Oh, all right.
00:36:22Thanks.
00:36:23Is it too late for me to get in?
00:36:25No.
00:36:26How much do you need?
00:36:27$70.
00:36:32$20, $40, $60, $70.
00:36:40$60, $70.
00:37:08Thanks very much, Miss Blake.
00:37:09That's all right.
00:37:10It's a privilege.
00:37:11I know it's a little late, but I'd like
00:37:13to congratulate you on the race.
00:37:15Thanks.
00:37:16I guess if you hadn't had to make that stop at the pit,
00:37:18this would have been a different story.
00:37:20Oh, I don't know.
00:37:24Well, I guess that's it, Miss Beverly.
00:37:26What do I owe you?
00:37:27$180.
00:37:29Another $5.
00:37:31Are you going to the Oakland race?
00:37:33Sure, are you?
00:37:34That's where I'm headed for.
00:37:35Well, I'll be seeing you there, then.
00:37:37Here's my dust in your eye.
00:37:38Yeah, the same to you.
00:37:40$25.
00:37:44So long.
00:37:45So long.
00:37:46So long, Miss Beverly.
00:37:47So long, Annie.
00:37:58Boy, oh boy, what a sweetheart.
00:38:02You know, Curly, I think I could learn
00:38:05to like that gal.
00:38:20And today's race, like many of its predecessors here,
00:38:22is 500 times around the mile track,
00:38:24a distance of 500 miles to the winner,
00:38:26a net purse of $10,000, plus enough points
00:38:29to hit for the big pond, Indianapolis.
00:38:32There are 33 starters here today,
00:38:34some new names and some old favorites.
00:38:36One of the added attractions is the beautiful
00:38:38and daring driver, the Blonde Comet,
00:38:40who last week set a new record in the Ascot race.
00:38:43Now it's about time for the cars to take position.
00:38:46The fastest qualifiers have been assigned positions
00:38:48nearest the pole car, which is a white coupe
00:38:51used by the officials.
00:38:52Take one more lap around the track
00:38:54and the cars will be all set.
00:38:55The pole car will drop out near the pit
00:38:57and the race will start.
00:38:58The Blonde Comet is just getting set
00:39:00close to the pole and it's a matter of seconds.
00:39:08Yes, they're off.
00:39:30Yes, they're off.
00:40:00Yes, they're off.
00:40:25Got that carburetor working like a charm.
00:40:27Blonde Comet must think she changed the pole to lightning.
00:40:58Come on, come on, come on.
00:41:08The position hasn't changed much since the start.
00:41:10As expected, the Blonde Comet has grabbed the lead.
00:41:13Glenn is second, Stuart third, Guy on fourth.
00:41:16Andy Freeman fifth, and the battle of wearing
00:41:18each other down is underway.
00:41:20It's 500 times around, that's the law of traveling.
00:41:28I've been watching that, Stuart, every time Glenn tries to pass him.
00:41:31There's something going on.
00:41:32Uh-oh, one of the officials is flagging Stuart to get over
00:41:35and let Jim pass.
00:41:37Jim passes.
00:41:39There's no attention to the flag.
00:41:41Well, he'd better do that than tangle with Glenn,
00:41:44who's a great driver, and blame it on the car.
00:41:47Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:41:51Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:41:54Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:41:56We've seen a few tight places that Jim Flynn got out of.
00:42:00Who said it, pal?
00:42:01He ain't playing around with Texas today.
00:42:03He ain't been around in Texas a day.
00:42:33He ain't been around in Texas a day.
00:43:04Back in the line, back in the line, back in the line...
00:43:08Flint finally got through it and it looked as if he was going to cut red start half.
00:43:12Red pulling in front of him again and again.
00:43:14That's bad driving and officials won't stand for it.
00:43:16But that's red at its best.
00:43:18Bad, mean, the positions change a little.
00:43:20Tomisk first, Flint second, and Stewart third.
00:43:23By putting the pressure on them.
00:43:25Don't take an eye off of this three-cornered babble.
00:43:27It's got the promise of being a fest.
00:43:33I don't know what's in store for Rhett Stewart after the race, either from the officials
00:44:02or Jim Flint.
00:44:03There's a pretty tough job to find by Rhett here today, and the crowd don't like it.

00:46:44Hey, Jim!
00:47:15The winner in five hours and 20 minutes for the 500 miles, Jim Flynn in a Miller Special
00:47:23first, Blancomette second, Ryan third, Atkinson fourth, Wood, fifth.
00:47:41I didn't do it, Teddy.
00:47:43Boy, that new car, they certainly did it today, Jim.
00:47:45Boy, that new car, they certainly did it today, Jim.
00:47:46Yep, I think we got the last kink out.
00:47:48Yep, I think we got the last kink out.
00:47:49She's 100% now.
00:47:50She's 100% now.
00:47:51Say, how did Rhett Stewart make out?
00:47:53He didn't.
00:47:54He didn't.
00:47:55That's too bad, I'm sorry.
00:47:56That's too bad, I'm sorry.
00:48:06Nice going, Groucho.
00:48:08Thanks.
00:48:09Thanks.
00:48:10Oh, uh...
00:48:11Oh, by the way, I believe this belongs to you.
00:48:15That makes us even.
00:48:17Yep.
00:48:18Looks like our little private view's going to carry over to Indianapolis.
00:48:21You're going to Indianapolis?
00:48:23Why, sure.
00:48:24This race gives me enough points to get in.
00:48:27Oh, by the way, Mr. Oldfield, Dad Wyden said he'd meet me there.
00:48:30He said he'd hoped he'd see you.
00:48:32Well, I'll have to look him up this year.
00:48:34Will I be seeing you too?
00:48:36Yes, yes.
00:48:37Just take a good look at the first car that passes you.
00:48:39That'll be me.
00:48:40You hope?
00:48:53Shun, tie it down tight, boys.
00:48:54It was loose last time.
00:48:57Jim, I got word from that pal of mine in Washington.
00:49:01He said Indianapolis race would cinch our new carburetor deal
00:49:04if you finished the money.
00:49:06That's a big order, Barney, but we'll be in there pitching anyway.
00:49:09Well, I'll see you tonight, Jim.
00:49:11Be sure to have that cup filled up with something besides beer.
00:49:14Okay, Barney.
00:49:15So long, Jim.
00:49:16So long.
00:49:26Say, you're not serious about entering the Indianapolis race, are you?
00:49:30Not serious?
00:49:31Of course I am.
00:49:32Why?
00:49:33Well, it's a pretty tough race.
00:49:35Too tough for a girl.
00:49:36It isn't like these tracks out here, you know.
00:49:38Besides, you'll be up against some crack drivers.
00:49:40You know, 500 miles is a terrible grind even for a man.
00:49:43Yes, I know all that.
00:49:44But I've got a job to do.
00:49:46Job?
00:49:47Yes.
00:49:48I thought you went into this racing business just for the fun of it.
00:49:50Oh, I'm not that crazy.
00:49:53Look, did you ever hear of the Trojan Tire?
00:49:56No, can't say that I have.
00:49:58Well, neither have millions of other people.
00:49:59Well, it's my job to see that they do.
00:50:01My dad makes them.
00:50:02I use them.
00:50:03My racing advertisements.
00:50:04Savvy.
00:50:05Yeah?
00:50:06Well, I think your dad ought to have his head examined for letting you do it.
00:50:10You do, eh?
00:50:11Yes, I do.
00:50:12What kind of a guy is he, anyway?
00:50:13Well, for one thing, he was a better race driver than you will ever be.
00:50:16For another, he didn't want me to do it.
00:50:18It was my own idea.
00:50:19And now, I'll thank you to mind your own business.
00:50:30Uh, did you find an address book here?
00:50:38Hello, Barney, you old lead foot.
00:50:41Why, hello, Karen Ball.
00:50:44Hello, Beverly.
00:50:45Hello, Barney.
00:50:46When did you get in?
00:50:47Just this morning.
00:50:48Sit down.
00:50:49Well, Barney, you haven't changed a bit, even to the famous old cigar.
00:50:53You know, I don't believe I ever saw him without it.
00:50:56Well, you haven't changed a whole lot yourself,
00:50:58except for that snow up there on the top of your dome.
00:51:01Well, I got that in the tire business.
00:51:03You know, I was mixed up in the tire business myself for a while.
00:51:05Have something?
00:51:06No, thank you.
00:51:07I'll have a cup of coffee.
00:51:09A cup of coffee and warm that up a bit while you're at it.
00:51:12You know, there's been a lot of changes around here since you and I hit those old bricks.
00:51:15That was a long time ago.
00:51:171919.
00:51:181916.
00:51:20That was before your time, young lady.
00:51:22Well, slightly.
00:51:24That was the year that Sweetborg and Art Barr got killed.
00:51:27Yeah, and Chuck Briggs and Lou Sher rolled over three times without even getting a scratch.
00:51:32That was the worst pileup I ever saw.
00:51:34I was clear across the track in sixth place when Sweetborg, coming out of the far turn, started to skid.
00:51:40Wild up crossways of the track, Chuck Briggs and Lou Sher were right behind.
00:51:44Too close to miss him.
00:51:46They all piled up.
00:51:48The track was fairly lit with wrecks.
00:51:51One was all over.
00:51:53Darned if Chuck Briggs and Lou Sher didn't pop out of their car like a couple of scared rabbits.
00:51:57It was almost a miracle.
00:51:59Lou Sher told me later that in those few seconds he thought of every mean thing he'd ever done to anybody.
00:52:04Well, that's all ancient history now, Barney.
00:52:07What are you doing now?
00:52:09Well, Jimmy Finn and I have got a new carburetor we're trying to put over.
00:52:12How's it going?
00:52:13Well, he used it at Ascot in Oakland and it was okay.
00:52:17And if he makes good with it tomorrow, everything will be all set.
00:52:20We might even get some government orders.
00:52:22Well, that's swell.
00:52:23And it all depends on Jim tomorrow?
00:52:25Just about.
00:52:26Well, that's a long chance.
00:52:28It seems to me that you would have tried to get it in two or three of the other cars, just in case.
00:52:33We did, but nobody would go for it.
00:52:35Is it really good?
00:52:37Well, Jim says that's the only thing that would beat you up in Oakland.
00:52:39Well, maybe I should protect myself tomorrow.
00:52:42What do you mean?
00:52:43Well, if I have one in my car, then we'll be even.
00:52:46Besides, you'll have two chances to prove it instead of one, won't you?
00:52:50All right.
00:52:51I think Jim would go for that.
00:52:52Well, if you don't mind, let's leave him out of it.
00:52:55Let's keep this just between us.
00:52:56Oh, well, if you feel that way, I have two of them up in my room at the hotel.
00:53:00Fine.
00:53:01We can put them on this afternoon.
00:53:02Great.
00:53:03I think it's a good idea.
00:53:04Yeah.
00:53:06Yeah.
00:53:29Marty, did I forget anything?
00:53:31How about the judgment on the carpet?
00:53:33How about the charge on the carburetor?
00:53:36The charge on the carburetor?
00:53:38Yes, I'm sure. I hope I...
00:53:40Oh, Barney, if I forgot...
00:53:43Did I lock that petcock?
00:53:44You didn't lock it, but...
00:53:46Barney, you're warning me to death.
00:53:48If that thing comes off... Oh, Barney!
00:54:34It's a good thing you came.
00:54:37You could have been killed.
00:54:42This has been an unusually quiet race.
00:54:44250 miles have been completed.
00:54:46Positions are...
00:54:47Bob Crammell first, Blonde Comet second,
00:54:50Ted Bell third, Jim Flynn fourth, Atkinson fifth,
00:54:53and the other cars are slowly moving into promise.
00:54:55This has been a slow race up to now,
00:54:57and it's doubtful if the time and the distance
00:54:59will equal that of last year.
00:55:01But it's hard to tell at this time.
00:55:03Oh, Jim, Jim, come on!
00:55:34It sounds good to you?
00:55:36It sounds perfect to me.
00:55:37Perfect?
00:55:39Yes, sir.
00:55:40It's got a nice rumble to it.
00:55:42I guess it's my imagination.
00:55:50Wait a minute.
00:55:51Look at that truck there.
00:55:52Who is it? Who is it?
00:55:54What number is it?
00:55:55It's not us.
00:55:57It's the police.
00:55:59The police?
00:56:00Yes, it's the police.
00:56:01It ain't us.
00:56:04That's a bad spill.
00:56:06There goes the first spill of the day.
00:56:08It's car number 13.
00:56:09It really took it that time.
00:56:11That's a tough spot, the upper right-hand turn.
00:56:14Car number 23 going into the pit.
00:56:16Looks like he blew a tire coming around the straightaway.
00:56:32See that girl in the circle hanging on to Crandall's tail?
00:56:35She's got plenty of lead in her foot today.
00:56:38Yeah, and I wanted a boy.
00:56:53She's getting far ahead of you.
00:56:54You made a mess, didn't you?
00:56:55Yeah, that's me. I was just thinking.
00:56:57How was that right tire there?
00:57:00Never mind the tire.
00:57:01When you told me about that fixture for that gas, did I...
00:57:04Yes, yes, I did, I did.
00:57:15Looks like I made a faux pas in the race today
00:57:18when I said the time of the race was slow
00:57:20and that the usual quietness prevailed around here today.
00:57:23That was Bob Crandall who crashed the second crash of the day.
00:57:26After leading 50 laps, Crandall snapped an axle,
00:57:29tearing his wheel out of gear.
00:57:31It looks pretty tough.
00:57:32The cars are observing the danger signal
00:57:34and maintaining their position
00:57:35until the track is cleaned of all debris.
00:57:37That puts the blonde comet in the lead,
00:57:39and I notice the speed has increased in the last 33 laps.
00:58:00490 miles have been run,
00:58:02at a speed a little greater than that of last year.
00:58:04It's amazing that the last 240 laps
00:58:06would have increased to a point
00:58:07that has maintained the record to be set here today.
00:58:10There are ten more laps to go.
00:58:12The positions are blonde comet first by four laps,
00:58:15Nick Langdon second by three laps,
00:58:17Jim Prym third by two laps,
00:58:19Pam Cooley fourth,
00:58:21and the rest of the field, two by two.
00:58:23It's amazing that the speed has increased
00:58:25in the last 33 laps.
00:58:27That has proved to critical comfort
00:58:29from the rest of the field
00:58:31too far out to be accounted for.
00:58:40Cross the wheel.
00:58:57Where is Jim?
00:58:58He's outside, in the kitchen.
00:59:01Where is he?
00:59:02Out there, in the kitchen.
00:59:04Don't you worry.
00:59:05He'll be back.
00:59:20Hey, Mr. McAvoy.
00:59:21Get up.
00:59:22Go back.
00:59:23What's happened?
00:59:24Dad, it's too much.
00:59:27It can't go on.
00:59:28Never mind, dear.
00:59:29Never mind.
00:59:30Get Jim.
00:59:31Quick.
00:59:32Let him finish.
00:59:34My car.
00:59:35Go on.
00:59:36Hurry.
00:59:37Take care of it, Jenny.
00:59:38Go on, Mr. Jim.
00:59:40Where's Jim?
00:59:42Right there.
00:59:43Hey, Jim.
00:59:44Come here.
00:59:45Beverly's calling.
00:59:46She wants you to finish the race in her car.
00:59:48Her?
00:59:49Yeah.
00:59:50Come on.
00:59:51Come on.
00:59:52Come on, Jim.
00:59:54Come on, Jim.
00:59:56Let's get going.
00:59:58It's Kalman Garga, Jim.
01:00:01Come on.
01:00:02Get in.
01:00:03All right.
01:00:04Cover off.
01:00:05That's it.
01:00:07There's the blonde comet's car coming out again.
01:00:12But she's out of the wheel.
01:00:14It looks like she's in the back of the car.
01:00:17Get in.
01:00:18Comet's car coming out again.
01:00:20But she's not on the wheel.
01:00:21It looks like...
01:00:22Just a minute, I'll check on...
01:00:24It's Jim Flynn substituting for the Blonde Comet.
01:00:27It's an unusual procedure to substitute a driver
01:00:29from an opposing car.
01:00:31I'll get the official track rolling
01:00:32before the race is over.
01:00:33Flynn is hitting up a good speed,
01:00:35trying to overtake Langdon, who's a half a lap ahead.
01:00:37The Blonde Comet lost four and a half laps,
01:00:40and there's still four to go, and it's anybody's race.
01:00:43He's got no time to hurry, he's steppin' along right well now, huh?
01:00:53How's he doing, Jenny?
01:01:08Oh, he's just passing everyone by, Yimney.
01:01:11It's better that you should go and lay down.
01:01:14That's what I did, out there.
01:01:16Oh?
01:01:17Yeah.
01:01:18He's got a lot of momentum coming into this stretch.
01:01:44He will have evened up at the distance,
01:01:45and the cars will be neck and neck to the finish
01:01:48with only two laps to go.
01:01:50Come on, Jimmy!
01:01:51Come on!
01:01:52Come on, Jimmy!
01:01:53Come on, Jimmy!
01:01:58There is the official car coming out of the flag,
01:02:00which according to the regulations
01:02:02is the flag singing the last time around
01:02:04completion of the 500 miles.
01:02:07It'll be hard to tell.
01:02:09Come on, Jim!
01:02:10Come on!
01:02:11I can't remember.
01:02:12In all my years of announcing here in Indianapolis,
01:02:15a race being so close, I don't even believe it.
01:02:19If it was such a thing as a photo finish,
01:02:21I wouldn't even believe that.
01:02:24They batted the last lap, not even a length apart.
01:02:27One of them has got to go.
01:02:28And from here, it's a race.
01:02:31It's a race.
01:02:32It's a race.
01:02:33It's a race.
01:02:34It's a race.
01:02:35It's a race.
01:02:36Let him go.
01:02:37And from here, I can't tell who.
01:02:47Go for it, Jimmy!
01:02:55You've got him, buddy!
01:02:57You've got him.
01:02:59What a sweetheart!
01:03:04You know Barney, this is the proudest day of my life.
01:03:07It's the proudest day of my life.
01:03:10And you know why?
01:03:12Sure I know why.
01:03:14All right, I'll tell you why.
01:03:16Do you realize that four Trojan tires went the whole 500 miles to Indianapolis today
01:03:22and finished in first place?
01:03:24Finished in first place, Barney.
01:03:26Sure, but those tires had had a tough time doing it
01:03:29if it hadn't been for Jim's carburetor.
01:03:31And don't forget that.
01:03:32Well, I'm not forgetting that.
01:03:34And I told Jim.
01:03:35I went to Jim.
01:03:36When I told him, I said, listen, Jim, didn't I tell you Jim...
01:03:39Hey!
01:03:41Where are those kids?
01:03:43Hey, Jim!
01:03:44Hey, Beverly!
01:03:45Hey, where'd Jim and Beverly go?
01:03:48Jim's dead, Barney.
01:03:49Hadn't we better go?
01:03:50I'm not going to let you leave here until you promise that today's race was your last,
01:03:53even if I have to keep you here until...
01:03:55well, until snow falls.
01:03:57But I can't do that.
01:03:58Why not?
01:03:59It's my job.
01:04:00No, it isn't.
01:04:01It's a man's job.
01:04:02From now on, the man of the family will take care of it.
01:04:04Is that so?
01:04:05Well, let me tell you that...
01:04:07Hey, wait a minute.
01:04:09Are you proposing to me?
01:04:11Say that again.
01:04:12You heard me.
01:04:14Well, of all the...
01:04:16Oh, I'm so excited.
01:04:23Thanks for this place, Tito.
01:04:25You're welcome.
