This alias was used by a few bands, but in this case it was a pseudonym for an orchestra led by Gus Deloof. Deloof was a famed Belgian trumpeter, composer and bandleader. He played in the Fud Candrix orchestra and composed the "Harlem Swing", covered by many big bands. He recorded in the early 1930s as "Gus Deloof and his Racketeers", during the war with his swing orchestra and after the war he played at the Victory Club in Brussels ("Liberation Blues"). He then recorded for the Belgian Victory record label. One of the featured vocalists was Dorothy Carless - a popular singer best known for having sung in the Glenn Miller Orchestra. This great record was waxed in 1932. Personnel included Gus Deloof (cnt, ldr) Victor Baudouin (tp) Josse Breyre, Marcel Thielemans (tb) David Bee (cl,as) Jack Lowens (as) Fud Candrix (ts,arr) Andre Lievens (p) [aka Joe Andy (p) ] Chas Dolne (g) Arthur Peeters (b) Leopold Serluppens (d) The Willie Lewis Entertainers : Willie Lewis (tenor vcl) John Mitchell (vcl,g) June Cole, Ted Fields (vcl). In this case, we are hearing a subset of the Willie Lewis Entertainers; usually he led a larger outfit. William T. Lewis (1905-1971) was an American jazz clarinetist and bandleader. Lewis grew up in Dallas and played in variety shows as a teen. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music, then played in Will Marion Cook's orchestra. When Cook's band was taken over by Sam Wooding, Lewis traveled with him on his tours of Europe, South America, and North Africa, remaining until Wooding disbanded the orchestra in 1931. Following this Lewis set up his own band, Willie Lewis and His Entertainers, which featured some of Wooding's old players and played to great success in Europe. Among those who played under Lewis were Herman Chittison, Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Garnet Clark, Bobby Martin, and June Cole. Lewis's Entertainers recorded for French label Disques Swing. In 1941 Lewis disbanded the Entertainers and returned to New York City. He played sparsely after this; he found some work as an actor, but took up waitering as his fortunes declined.
